When one of their fellow workers was in the hospital several years ago, the employees of Virginia Western Community College's Brown Library decided to help pay the worker's hospital bills rather than spend the money on Christmas presents for each other.
They enjoyed the feeling it gave them, so they decided to make charity a Christmas tradition at the library. This year, the employees made a donation to the Good Neighbors Fund in memory of Larry Cook, a friend and former photographer at Virginia Western.
"Larry was just a really nice guy," said Judy Moreth, an assistant at the library. "Everyone on campus loved him so much."
Cook died about 10 years ago after a yearlong battle with cancer, Moreth said. Even when he was very sick, he made an effor1
t to get to work every day, despite a long drive from Fincastle, she said.
"He is very fondly remembered around here. We still miss him and think about him all the time."
