AROUND NEW RIVER

1,400 families helped

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Christmas Store served approximately 1,400 families from Wednesday through Saturday.

From 150 to 200 volunteers were on hand daily to assist with shopping. The store is now closed for the 1995 season.

The Christmas store set a goal of $110,000 for 1995. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised. Cash donations are welcome all year, but the store is no longer accepting donations of goods. Call Joyce Hendricks at 951-2188.

Advisers needed

CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Public Schools need people from business and industry for two volunteer positions on the Vocational Education Advisory Council. Vocational education is an integral part of each secondary school's instructional program and prepares students for work. No garbage collection

BLACKSBURG - There will be no garbage collection in Blacksburg on Christmas Day. Garbage and recycled materials that would normally be picked up on Monday, Dec. 25, will be collected on Saturday, Dec. 23. Call the Waste Management Office at 961-1851.

Miss NRV Pageant

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Miss New River Valley Scholarship Pageant Committee is accepting applications for the 1996 title. This pageant is the official local preliminary to the Miss Virginia Pageant in the Miss America system.

Miss New River Valley 1996 will receive a scholarship of $1000, and will compete this summer in the Miss Virginia Pageant in Roanoke.

Contestants must reside in the State of Virginia. They will be judged in swimsuits, evening gowns, and private interviews.
