The eastbound lane of U.S. 460 was closed for nearly an hour Monday morning near Coyner Springs after a van rear-ended a tractor-trailer, state police said.
At about 8, a bobtail truck - just the cab section of a tractor-trailer - attempted to coast to the right shoulder after losing engine power, police said.
A van driven by Deronda Sheffer, 40, of Salem apparently hit the back of the truck, State Trooper Malcolm Austin said.
The accident pinned Sheffer's 7-year-old son, Michael, in the front seat. Rescue workers extricated him.
Sheffer's 9-year-old son, Matthew, was seated in the back and received minor injuries, Austin said.
Late Monday, the brothers were in stable condition, and Deronda Sheffer was in surgery, according to a nursing supervisor at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Sheffer and her sons were wearing seat belts. The truck driver was not injured. Austin said charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
