FREE THROWS LIFT CATHOLIC

Aki Al-Zubaidi made two free throws with three seconds remaining to give Roanoke Catholic a 67-65 victory over Hargrave Military on Monday night in the Celtics' home opener.

Hargrave Military (0-4) missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.

Roanoke Catholic trailed by 12 late in the third quarter, but used pressure defense to outscore the visitors 21-14 in the final period. Alex Dickson had seven of his 16 points in that quarter and finished with eight assists.

Chris Lothes pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds and added 20 points for the Celtics. Brendan McCarthy had 11 points and Al-Zubaidi finished with 10.

Carlos Pearson paced Hargrave with 31 points, and James Searcy added 16.

Glenvar 78, North Cross 56: Josh Williamson and Eric East scored 17 points each, and the Highlanders jumped out to an early lead and cruised past the Raiders in a non-district game at North Cross.

James Williams added 14 points for Glenvar (2-1), which led by 16 at halftime.

The Raiders (0-2), who cut their deficit to 10 twice in the second half, were led by Jon Mull and William Watkins, who scored 13 each. Brian Whitaker added 12 for North Cross.

James River 81, Shawsville 48: Shahan Burrell scored 10 of his 21 points in the opening quarter, and the Knights used a full-court press to take an early lead and roll past the Shawnees in a non-district matchup in Buchanan.

James River (3-0) led 37-16 at the half and outscored Shawsville 27-16 in the final period. Chad Neighbors scored six of his eight points and Tommy Perkey had all six of his in the closing quarter.

Brian Shorter added 12 points.

Chris Graham paced Shawsville (1-2) with 11 points.

Covington Boys' Home 72, Craig County 63: Sean Riddick scored 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Indians pulled away from the Rockets in a non-district game in Covington and remain unbeaten.

Riddick made five of seven free throws in the fourth quarter and Nebiyu Noad hit two of four free throws as Boys' Home (6-0) made seven of 11 in the fourth quarter despite shooting 10-of-21 for the game.

Freddy Portillo led Boys' Home with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.

Craig County (0-1) was led by Jamie Fisher and Eric Gillingham, who scored 21 each.
