Virginia Tech moved up from 19th to 17th, while Virginia dropped from 15th to 23rd in The Associated Press' men's basketball rankings released Monday.
The Hokies (3-0) downed VMI in their only game last week, while the Cavaliers were upset at home by Vanderbilt and beat Richmond on the road.
Meanwhile, Kansas was able to do something it hadn't done the past two seasons - hold the No.1 ranking for more than a week.
The Jayhawks (5-0) scored easy road wins over Rice and San Diego last week and remained the runaway choice as the nation's No.1 team.
The Jayhawks received 55 first-place votes and 1,637 votes to easily outdistance Villanova (7-0), which held second with three No.1 votes and 1,545 points.
Villanova (7-0) held second, while Massachusetts (5-0) was third, Arizona (7-0) fourth and Kentucky fifth.
WOMEN'S TOP NINE UNCHANGED: Virginia (4-2), despite a loss to No.4 Vanderbilt, remained fifth in the AP's women's poll released Monday.
Louisiana Tech remained No.1 in the poll, which had few changes from last week. In fact, the top nine teams were unchanged and No.23 Oklahoma State was the only newcomer, replacing Western Kentucky.
Monday's games
Duquesne 77, Coppin St. 76: Nick Bosnic scored 25 points and Tom Pipkins added 24 to rally Duquesne (2-2) over Coppin State (2-2).
Terquin Mott led Coppin State (2-2) with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Hampden-Sydney JV 92, Virginia Western 71: James Vaughan scored 18 points to pace five players in double figures as the Hampden-Sydney junior varsity (3-3) defeated Virginia Western in Hampden-Sydney.
Virginia Western (1-1) was led by Treymayne McHeimer, who scored 25 points.
