3 members of House to give up their seats

WASHINGTON - Three House members announced Monday they will retire next year. Two are leaving politics and the third, Democrat Robert Torricelli of New Jersey, said he'll run for an open Senate seat.

The departures by Torricelli, Oklahoma Democrat Bill Brewster and Texas Republican Jack Fields mean at least 27 seats - 19 Democratic and eight Republican - will be open contests in the November 1996 election.

The current House lineup is 235 Republicans, 197 Democrats, one independent and two vacancies.

Falsely accused teen files $85 million suit

WASHINGTON - A black teen-ager who was falsely accused of shoplifting and stripped of his shirt by security guards at an Eddie Bauer store in Maryland filed an $85 million lawsuit Monday against the retailer.

Alonzo Jackson, who was forced to leave the store in his undershirt, claimed he was a victim of ``consumer racism.''

Rasheed Plummer, a friend who was shopping with Jackson, joined in the lawsuit.

The incident occurred while the two 16-year-olds were shopping at a store in Ft. Washington, Md., on Oct. 20.

Two off-duty Prince George's County police officers, working temporarily as security guards, asked to see a receipt for the shirt Jackson was wearing.

He had bought the shirt at the same store two days earlier.

When Jackson said he did not have the receipt with him, he was forced to take off the shirt and turn it over to the guards, the suit said. The shirt was not given back to Jackson until he returned later that evening with the receipt, which he had kept at home.
