AKERS, Shirley Price, 69, of Christiansburg, died Monday, December 11, 1995, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Junior Thomas Akers; one sister, Roma C. King, Mt. Tabor, N.J.; a niece, Sandra Cisco, Mt. Tabor, N.J.; a nephew, Bill King, Mt. Tabor, N.J. She was a member of McDaniel Chapter #47 Order of the Eastern Star in Christiansburg. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Monroe Hedrick with burial in Sunset Cemetery. ALEXANDER, Nellie Frazier, 84, of Route 1, Austinville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 10, 1995 at Eldercare of Hillsville. S he was born December 15, 1910 in Carroll County. She was the daughter of the late Rufus Frazier and Mattie Edmonds Frazier. She is survived by her husband, William Jackson Alexander; four sons and daughters-in-law, Olen and Melda Alexander, Austinville, Rufus and Lou Alexander, Collinsville, Everett and Beatrice Alexander, Max Meadows, Lloyd (Pete) and Peggy Alexander, Austinville; one brother, Jerry Frazier, Austinville; one sister, Annidean Davidson, Pulaski; eleven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 1995 at Shorts Creek Church of God, conducted by Tony Ellis, the Rev. Dale Frazier, Brother Marvin Tabora, and Brother Clyde McKay. ANDREWS, Hazel Lee , of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 10, 1995. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Richard H. (Peggy) Andrews, Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elsie A. (Melvin C.) Anderson Jr ., Joyce A. (Rev. J. R.) Bonds Sr.; one brother and sister-in-law, Rev. BOWYER, Rev. Silas David, 81, of 1020 Madison Street, Bedford, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 10, 1995. He joins his wife, Mary Cornelia Hudson Bowyer and son, William C. Bowyer. He was born in Bedford County on March 7, 1914, a son of the late John David Bowyer and Paralee Irene Craig Bowyer. He was a Army veteran, serving in World War II. Silas was a retired employee of Hampton Looms of Virginia and he ministered the word of God throughout Bedford County for many years. He is survived by a daughter, Bessie B. Dedmon, Cabot, Ar.; a son, Nathan Bowyer, Mt. Pleasant, Texas; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 1995 at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John R. Ivins officiating. BURNETTE, Ashby Miller, 68, died Sunday, December 10, 1995. He was a member of the Bluefield Mercer Lodge #85 A.F. & A.M., and the Bluefield Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bennie Burnette; two sisters, Janie Viar, Francis Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Burnette; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Wanda and Raymond Bowman, Troutville, Charlotte and Jr. Massey, Blue Ridge, Gloria (Jeannie) Burnette, Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond Wayne and Patsy Burnette, Statesville, N.C.; two sisters, Estelle Howard and Eleanor Burnette, both of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Nathan Counts, Travis J. CLARK, Melvin Grant Jr., of Jacksonville, Fla., died Saturday, December 9, 1995 in Jacksonville, Fla. A graduate of the University of North Florida, he was employed by the City of Jacksonville as an Engineer for the past 10 years. He was also a member of St. John's Cathedral. He was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Yates Clark in 1988 and his family includes his father, Melvin Grant (Mel) Clark Sr. and his wife, Gayle of Neptune Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Donna Frye, Keystone Heights, Fla. and Darlene Crockett, Roanoke; five nieces and five nephews. CLOWERS, Cassie Marshall, 93, of Dugspur, passed away Sunday night, December 10, 1995, at her home. She was bo rn September 20, 1902 in Carroll County to Norman and Laura Jennings Marshall. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Quesenberry; her father, mother, and a sister, Emma Brubaker. Survivors include her husband, John Clowers; a brother, Earl Marshall; sisters, Susie Berdahl, Orlando, Fla., Naomi Davidson and Velmer Hardy, Roanoke, Mae Ferguson, Wilkesboro, N.C., Orpah Graham, Fries, and Tida Huff, Sylvatus; and a host of nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. DENT, Lula Mitchell, 73, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 11, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Albert Dent Sr. in 1987, and her son, Lawrence Elmer Dent in March 1995. CUMBEE, Betty Jane King, 70, of Pembroke, died Monday, December 11, 1995 at her home. Born in Giles Co. on January 8, 1925, she was a daughter of Charles Cloyd and Elizabeth Miller King. She was the wife of the late William Lee Cumbee Sr., was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Pembroke, and was retired as a merchant from the family business. Surviving are her three sons and daughters-in-law, William Lee ``Bill"" Cumbee Jr. and wife, Carolyn of Gainseville, Ga., Richard Sheridan Cumbee and wife, Lynn of Pueblo West, Colorado, and Donald King Cumbee and wife, Sara of Pembroke; two grandsons, Michael L. Cumbee and Mark K. Cumbee; three granddaughters, Leigh S. Cumbee, Melanie D. Cumbee and Tonia L. FLORA. Howard Benjamin, Sr., 76, of Boones Mill, died Sunday, December 10, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital, after a strong and courageous battle. He was a son of the late Harvey B. and Elizabeth Peters Flora, was a longtime member and Deacon of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, and retired from Pet Dairy Inc. Howard was a tower of strength, support and guidance to his wife of 53 years, his children and his grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy. Worldly possessions meant little to him, his greatest possessions where the times he spent with his family. He was the true example of a husband, father, grandfather and brother. Surviving are his wife, Mary Saul Flora, of the home; his children, Suzette Flora Bryant, Henry, Howard B. Jr. and Susan P. Flora, Va. Beach, Jennifer L. Flora, Rocky Mount, Stephen D. and Sandra L. HARTWELL, Elsie G., of Roanoke, succumbed after a brief illness on Sunday afternoon, December 10, 1995, in Radford Community Hospital. She was a lifetime member of St. John's Episcopal Church (where she was a renowned and well respected soloist in the choir) and a retired teller from Colonial American Bank. Preceding her in death were her parents, Anna May Turpin and William G. Hartwell; her grandparents, Mary Garland Royall and Dr. Thomas Jefferson Turpin, Powhatan County; Eliza Garvin and John William Hartwell, Roanoke. Surviving are a nephew and his wife, H. R. and Karen Hartwell, Radford; three great-nieces, Tracey L. Courtner, Hickory, N.C., Laurie A. Hartwell, Roanoke, Mitzi S. Ramsey, Brunswick, Ga.; a great-nephew, H. R. Hartwell III, Radford. HOBSON, Roger Franklin, 39, of Lexington, died Monday, December 12, 1995, in a Charlottesville hospital. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger E. Hobson, he was born October 25, 1956 in Waynesboro, Va. He attended the local public school, the First Baptist Church and worked as a handyman. Surviving are his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Roger E. Hobson; three brothers, James Hobson , William Hobson, and Ronald Hobson, all of Lexington; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Cooper, Lynchburg; numerous nephews, nieces and a special friend, John Davis. KILBURN, David Colin, 67, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Thursday, December 7, 1995. He was the former coach and general manager of the Salem Rebels and Roanoke Valley Rebels Hockey Clubs and was very active in youth hockey in the Roanoke Valley and Edmonton. He is survived by his wife, Lois Kilburn, Salem; a daughte r, Lynne Kilburn, Moneta; a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Shai Kilburn, Spokane, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Garry Bowles, Roanoke; five grandchildren; two sisters; three brothers. MANUEL, Garland Thomas, 79, of Chilhowie, died Monday, December 11, 1995 at his home. He was a member of the Chilhowie United Methodist Church and a U. S. Marine Corps veteran. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jackson Manuel; two daughters, Carol (Suzie) Manuel Hawkins, Roanoke, Dora (Winkie) Conkling, Ster ling, Ill.; two brothers, Lewis D. MEEKS, Col. Ret. Lawrence Eugene, 88, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 9, 1995 at The McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Va. On June 6, 1944, Col. Meeks commanded the 3rd Battlion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division across Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He later served as Regimental Executive Officer of the 507th Regiment, 17th Airborne Division and as Senior Military Advisor to the Commanding General of South Korea, 37th Infantry Division. His military honors include the Combat Infantry Badge, two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars for Gallantry in Action and the European Campaign Medal with one Invasion Arrowhead and four Battle Stars. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre from the government of France. He was a member of the Hunt Bible Class of the Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke. Col. Meeks was preceded in death by his wife, Arvia Bryant Meeks and a half brother, John A. Kelley. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence E. Meeks II and Jacqueline Norman Meeks; granddaughters, Jennifer and Kathryn Meeks all Midlothian, Va.; half sister, Oneida Kelley Crowder of Troutville and half brothers, Claude Kelley and Aubrey Kelley both of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Sherwood Memorial Park. PETERS, Onie Florence Shively, 83, of Ferrum, died Monday, December 11, 1995. Born September 24, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Wal ter and Jennie Scott Shively. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Lemon Peters. SMITH, George Edward, (``Ed''), 74, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, December 10, 1995 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born March 15, 1921 in Bedford County, a son of the late Harry Smith and Nora Feagans Smith. He was a retired employee of Rubatex, a member of the Bedford Hunt Club, and was a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church, having served as a deacon since 1960. He is survived by his wife, Zena Overstreet Smith; three daughters, Lois S. Borough, Stafford, Ruby S. Dooley, Huddleston, Joyce S. Witt, Forest; five sons, Ray E. Smith, Honaker, Wayne L. Smith, Gladys, Nathan G. Smith, Ronnie L. Smith, Roger (Pete) Smith, all of Bedford; two brothers, Harry F. Smith, Clyde T. Smith, both of Bedford; two sisters, Catherine Yopp, Bedford, Louise S. Nance, Salem; 15 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 13, 1995 at 11 a.m. from the Flint Hill Baptist Church, by the Rev. Norman Gooding, the Rev. STAPLES, Beatrice Blackwell Gares, (``Bea""), 84, of Richmond, formerly of Lexington, died Monday, December 11, 1995 in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Staples was born May 21, 1911 in Rockbridge County, Va., a daughter of the late David William Blackwell and Ethel War d Blackwell. She was a member of the Spring Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, John Wesley Gares, West Palm Beach, Fla., Robert William Gares, Versailles, Mo.; four sisters, Mabel Sweat, Baltimore, Md., Virginia Morgan, Lexington, Rebecca Hostetter, Lexington, Frances McCormick, Rockbridge Baths; one brother, Carl Blackwell, Rockbridge Baths. TAPSCOTT, Marvis Woolwine, (``Sweetie"") 70, of Roanoke, died Sunday, December 10, 1995 at her home. Her daughters and grandson were with her. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and National Business College, where she was voted Best Personality in her class. She attended Christ Lutheran Church and had owned and managed Roanoke Valley Babysitters, which she founded in 1969. As an avid traveller over the past 20 years, she explored much of the United States in her motor homes. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Mr. C. W. C. Woolwine and her parents, C. M. and Eva Woolwine. Surviving are a daughter, Celia Audrey Tapscott, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Dian Lee Tapscott and Thomas Ludlow Myers, Fort Myers, Fla.; and a grandson, Tony Tapscott Myers, Fort Myers, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. W. M. Radecke and the Rev. Robin L. Henrickson officiating. Burial will follow in Fair View Cemetery. TILLAR, Louise Mitchell, 85, of Christiansburg, died late Sunday, December 10, 1995, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was the widow of W. C. ``Jack'' Mitchell and Donaldson P. Tillar. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William Mac and Lynne Mitchell of Christian sburg; three stepsons and their wives, Don P. and Hazel Tillar, Charlottesville, David and Ames Tillar, Bill and Patty Tillar, all of Emporia; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel, conducted by Dr. Leighton Culler, with interment in Sunset Cemetery.
