COLUMN: The good neighbors fund

HE'S GONE, BUT CANINE CONTRIBUTOR'S LEGACY LIVES ON

Sam D. Otey, a regular contributor to the Good Neighbors Fund, unfortunately will not be able to make his annual gift. In August, at the ripe age of 14, the generous poodle went on to his canine reward.

However, his mistress and partner in philanthropy, Isabel Otey, who informed the newspaper three years ago of Sam's species, continues the tradition. "It is fitting that this contribution be in memory of Sam," she wrote.

Another group of contributors was driven to donate - driven by Larry Lance to Lake Junaluska, N.C., near Asheville, to attend the annual Christmas concert of the Junaluska Singers, conducted by Roanoke native Glen Draper.

The Greene Memorial United Methodist Church group made a collective donation in Lance's honor because, wrote the Junaluska Bus Bunch, he "took vacation time from his regular employment to serve, with considerable skill, efficiency and compassion, as our bus driver for this excursion."

Tuesday's contributors included:
