JAMES RIVER TOPS AUBURN 51-47 ROUNDUP

James River had no player score in double figures, but it still had enough to beat Auburn 51-47 on Tuesday in a non-district boys' high school basketball game in Buchanan.

The Knights led by 14 points at halftime, but that lead dwindled to three points twice in the second half. The first time was with 1:05 left in the third quarter. The second was with 1:30 left in the game.

The Knights made only four of 12 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles (0-6) a chance.

Jason Perry led the Knights (4-0) with 12 rebounds, five steals and five points. Brian Shorter led the balanced scoring attack with eight points.

Kenny Wojciechowski was the high scorer for the Eagles with 18 points, eight of which came in the first quarter. Conrad Hughes added 11 points.

Rockbridge County 62, Covington 55: Jaymie Terrell scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including all four of his 3-pointers, as the Wildcats beat the Cougars and snapped a 37-game losing streak.

``It's the best feeling I've had as a coach,'' said Damon Williams, in his third year as the Wildcats' coach. ``I know it's a non-district game, but, hopefully, this was a start. Our players showed a will to win, which was the most important thing.''

Rockbridge (1-3) trailed 12-6 after the first quarter but came back to grab a 25-23 halftime lead. The Wildcats increased their lead to six after three quarters, 41-35, but the Cougars (1-3) cut the deficit to three.

Cory Whitaker had a game-high 24 points for Covington, which had four players score, three of them accounting for 52 of 55 points. Mike Barber and Brian Holloway had 14 apiece for the Cougars.

Ricky Wright scored 15 points and was praised for his rebounding by Williams, a former VMI star from Roanoke. John Haston added 12 points.

Rockbridge County was 0-22 last season.

GW-Danville 69, Cave Spring 53: Cave Spring fell to one of the state's top teams in GW-Danville in a non-district contest.

In the first, third and fourth quarters, the Knights (2-2) played with the Eagles (4-0), trailing only by seven points.

However, in the decisive second quarter, GW-Danville executed its half-court offense efficiently and capitalized on some costly Cave Spring turnovers to turn a two-point lead into an 11-point halftime lead.

The Eagles were led by Haward Graves, who poured in 18 points. The Knights were led by Jeff Lang, who tallied 19.

Roanoke Valley Christian 81, Lord Botetourt 63: Joel Nester had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Chris Huffman scored eight points during a key third-period run to lift the Eagles over the Cavaliers.

Roanoke Valley Christian (3-1) outscored Lord Botetourt 24-8 in the third quarter to take a 64-45 lead.

Nester was 11-of-15 on field-goal attempts. Mark DeLong had 12 points for the Eagles, and Eric Johnson and Huffman had 11 each.

Wesley Cox led Lord Botetourt (0-3) with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Salem 56, Blacksburg 42: The Spartans (1-0) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a non-district boys win over the Indians (0-2).

Herschel Thomas led the Spartans with 13 points. The Indians were led by Phillip Klaus who tallied 15.

E.C. Glass 57, William Fleming 50: Fueled by a 24-point loss a week and a half ago at William Fleming, E.C. Glass got its revenge over the Colonels in an overtime non-district win in Lynchburg.

Jamar Harden sank two free throws for the Hilltoppers in the closing seconds to send the contest to overtime. The free throws completed a comeback that saw the Colonels lead by as many as 10 at one point.

Lamont Hughes was the high-scorer for the Hilltoppers, with 14 points. Lee Crank chipped in 10, and Andre Kendrick, who missed the first match up with the Colonels due to football, added nine. Harden finished with seven points and Ricky Duncan pulled down nine rebounds in the win.

Brad Dunleavy started off with 12 points in the first quarter for Fleming, but was held to only six more points in the rest of the game for a game-high 18. Charles Burnette chipped in 15 in the losing effort.

The Hilltoppers (2-1) held James Stokes to only two points in regulation, and allowed him only a bucket in the overtime, for a total of four. Stokes scorched Glass for 21 in the previous meeting.
