A 21-year-old New York man being pursued by police crashed on Interstate 77 north of Wytheville on Tuesday, leaving his female passenger in critical condition.
Authorities had not provided information Wednesday night about why Dale Robert Provost of Saranak, N.Y., was being chased. But he now faces charges of hit and run, reckless driving and not having an operator's license, said Trooper B.H. Martin.
Martin said Provost cut through the median strip of the interstate while driving south trying to elude police, and collided with a tractor-trailer when he came back across. Both Provost and the driver of the tractor-trailer, Roger Dale Light of Dalebarton, W.Va., were treated at Wythe County Community Hospital and released.
But a juvenile female passenger in Provost's car was seriously injured and flown to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. Her name was not available Wednesday night.
Martin said Provost jumped out of the wrecked car and ran, but soon was apprehended. The crash happened about 10:41 a.m. Tuesday.
