SOUTHERN CONFERENCE EXPANDING

The Southern Conference executive committee has voted to invite the College of Charleston to join the league, which includes VMI, and a published report says the school will accept the offer.

The conference will extend a bid to the school and the college will accept the invitation during an official announcement next week, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported Wednesday.

Tony Ciuffo, sports information director at the College of Charleston, said he didn't know whether school administrators and trustees had discussed the matter. The report ``makes it sound like it's happened, but it hasn't,'' he said.

The school could not join the league before the 1998-99 season because of commitments to the Trans America Athletic Conference. Wofford and North Carolina-Greensboro also will receive invitations to join the Southern Conference beginning with the 1998-99 season, the paper said.

One of the longest winning streaks in Timesland history is over after Franklin County beat Northside 69-9 in a late-finishing quad high school wrestling match Tuesday night in Rocky Mount.

The Eagles ended a streak of 69 dual meet victories in a row by the Vikings that lasted under two coaches - Fred Wagner, who left after the 1994 season, and Mark Agner, whose team won 13 in a row last year before being hit hard by graduation.

The 1989-90 season was the last time Northside lost a dual meet when it fell to Group AAA Heritage 42-24. The Vikings didn't wrestle Franklin County and other Group AAA Roanoke Valley District powers in dual meets until this year when Agner agreed to participate in the Eagles' quad match that also included Grundy.

The Vikings also lost 69-0 to Grundy, but then started a new streak by beating Rockbridge County 54-27.

Franklin County lost to Grundy 60-6. Grundy is an overwhelming favorite to win its 10th consecutive Group AA title. Ivan Trotter (145 pounds) and Brian Jones (151) were the only Franklin County winners. Franklin County also beat Rockbridge County 48-34.

After finishing third at the NCAA Division III Championships in the spring, the Washington and Lee women's tennis team is ranked fourth in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Kenyon (Ohio) is ranked first.

Generals sophomore Natalia Garcia and senior Julie Ayers are the No.1 doubles team in the same rankings. In addition, Garcia is tied for the No.4 ranking in singles. Ayers and sophomore Ericka Shapard are tied for 17th in the singles rankings.
