After keeping Roanoke guessing for months, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. finally has announced an opening date for its supercenter near Valley View Mall.
The 200,000-square-foot store will open Jan. 24, a Wednesday, said Wal-Mart corporate spokesman Keith Morris.
A Wal-Mart Supercenter in Christiansburg, which will be located across Peppers Ferry Road from New River Valley Mall, will open in March or early April, Morris said. A third area supercenter is scheduled to open just east of Rocky Mount on Virginia 40 early next summer.
Wal-Mart opened about 70 supercenters this year and has announced plans to open 100 more in 1996.
The new stores will be open 24 hours a day and will include grocery departments, auto centers, hair salons, vision centers and one-hour photo counters in addition to Wal-Mart's discount store inventory. Wal-Mart has said that each store will employ about 400 people.
Also on Wednesday, Richmond-based Central Fidelity Banks Inc. said it will operate full-service branches inside the new Roanoke and Christiansburg Wal-Marts.
