VALUJET CONSIDERING NEWPORT NEWS SITE

ValuJet Airlines, which handles all of its customers' reservations, is considering Newport News as a potential site for its third telephone reservations center, company and city officials said.

Newport News is among several locations being considered for the center, which would open by March with 100 employees, said Alan Witt, chairman of the city's Industrial Development Authority. The center could eventually employ as many as 500 workers.

``They're looking here because they have flight service here,'' Witt said.

Atlanta-based ValuJet, a low-fare, short-haul carrier, added service to Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport in July after Newport News gave it more than $2 million.

Since then, the 2-year-old company has added three additional routes and 600 employees, said spokeswoman Katie deNourie.

``We are looking to open a new center to keep up with the growth we anticipate,'' DeNourie said.
