BYRD UPENDS BASETT 62-48

Chris Childress took advantage of Bassett standout Devonne Claybrooks' first-half foul trouble as William Byrd jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a 62-48 non-district boys' basketball victory Wednesday night in Bassett.

With Claybrooks sitting on the bench in the second quarter, Childress scored 11 of his game-high 25 points as the Terriers (3-0) outscored the Bengals 24-8 in the second quarter.

Bassett (3-2) cut the lead to 10 in the second half behind Claybrooks, who scored 18 of his 21 in the second half.

Grayson County 63, Rural Retreat 53: In Rural Retreat, Wes Self had 22 points to lead the Blue Devils to a non-district victory.

Grayson County (3-0) led 29-22 at halftime and held Rural Retreat to nine points in the third quarter to seize control.

The Indians (0-2) got 13 points each from Wayne Terry and Chris Rakes.

Giles 58, Rocky Gap 35 Aaron Myers scored six of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as Giles broke open a close game and pulled away over Rocky Gap in a non-district game at Rocky Gap.

Robbie Claytor scored six of his eight points in the fourth as the Spartans (2-1) outscored the Eagles 23-8 in the final period. John King led Giles with a game-high 17 points.

Rocky Gap (0-2) was led by Will Dodson, who scored 14 points. Nathan Blessing added 12 points and six rebounds.

George Wythe 60, Marion 59 George Wythe jumped out to a big lead and then used some timely free-throw shooting from Brian Barnes to hold off Marion in a non-district stem-winder at Wytheville.

Barnes, who scored 18 points, made six of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter as the Maroons (4-0) made nine of 14 in fourth despite shooting just 10-of-22 for the game.

Justin Bourne added 17 points for the Maroons and Freddy Moses had 10.

Marion was led by Leon Rasnake, who scored a game-high 19.

Galax 52, Shawsville 38: Nate Noel has a name suitable for the holidays and a game suitable for success.

The 6-4 forward for Galax had 18 points, 15 in the first half, to lead the Maroon Tide past Shawsville. Noel also made four 3-pointers.

Larry Smith had a game-high 22 points and five 3-pointers for the Shawnees. No team had played zone against Shawsville (1-3) this season.

Jeff Ross added 12 points for Galax (3-2).

Tuesday's games

Bassett 71 Chatham 54: The Bengals (3-1 overall, 3-1 district) jumped on the Cavaliers (0-4, 0-4) in the first and third quarters en route to a Piedmont District victory in Chatham.

Bassett beat the Cavaliers on the boards, outrebounding them 57-31. Bassett was led by Devon Claybrooks, who had a game-high 29 points and 17 rebounds. Jeremy Kennedy added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Travis Hairston led Chatham with 12 points.

Rainelle (W.Va.) Christian 74, Gateway Christian 61: Josh Workman had 11 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as Rainelle (2-1) pulled away from the Crusaders.

Scott Perfater led Gateway (2-3) with 18 points, Ryan Gordon had 11 and Brad Duncan, Allen Surface and J.T. Surface each scored 10.

Staunton River 96, Jefferson Forest 91, 3OT: Once the Cavaliers' top two scorers were forced to sit with five fouls each, the Golden Eagles (2-2, 2-2) pulled away for a triple-overtime Seminole District victory in Moneta.

Kevin Martin led the way in the final overtime as Staunton River outscored Jefferson Forest 13-8.

The Golden Eagles' Hunter Hoggatt led all scorers, with 37 points. Jeff English had 19 and Chris Martin 15.

Zok Stenson had 17 for the Cavaliers, Jevon Austin scored 14 and Anthony Moreno added 10.

Jefferson Forest managed only one field goal in the final overtime period.

Hoggatt sent the game into the first overtime with a buzzer-beater that tied the score at 64. Stenson sent it to the second overtime at 74-74 with a basket with nine seconds to go.

Halifax County 92, Franklin County 63: Shannon Martin with 19 and Sadaughn Bailey with 17 points led the Comets to their first victory in four games, a non-district triumph over the Eagles (0-4) in South Boston. Travis Kent of Franklin County had a game-high 20 points.
