SALEM HIGH ATHLETE WINS AWARD

Salem senior Marilyn Shin Huang is the Pepsi Cola/Harris Teeter female scholar athlete from Virginia, and she'll receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

Huang is the initial winner of this award as Virginia is participating for the first time. Eddie Dean Jr. of Cumberland High School in Cartersville, Va., is the male winner.

Huang is a member of the Salem girls' basketball team, plays volleyball and runs track. In basketball, she has started the last two years for a team that made the Group AA state tournament last fall and this season beat both William Byrd and Lord Botetourt, the two Group AA state finalists, during the regular season.

Academically, Huang is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate with a course load of seven college courses, a research project and 200 hours of community service.

Salem teacher Betsy McLearn, who along with girls' basketball coach Dee Wright, made the nomination, summarized Huang as ``young woman who demonstrates mature judgment, immunity to peer pressure and a commitment to excellence academically and athletically.''
