FOUR ORCHESTRA STUDENTS from Patrick Henry High School won seats in the Western Regional String Orchestra. Carrie Mullens, Daniel Mullens, Ben Rice and Kelly Rosenberger auditioned and were selected to perform with the orchestra in Lynchburg on Nov. 11.
THE DEBATE AND SPEECH SOCIETY from Patrick Henry High School has won several awards. In a Nov. 4 tournament at Blacksburg High School, senior Gordon Lawson won first place in extemporaneous speaking; senior Nikki Bright and junior Yaron Rachlin took first and second place respectively in the debate category.
In an earlier tournament, Rachlin won first place in the novice debate division and second place in the overall competition; senior Patrick Wright placed first in the original oratory category. Additionally, at a national tournament in Washington D.C., Lawson placed fifth in extemporaneous speaking.
GRANT CARTER, a senior at Cave Spring High School, was selected to appear in the 1996 edition of Who's Who Among American High School Students.
GARLAND S. LYNN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lynn of Roanoke, was named to the first quarter academic honor roll at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. The list recognizes students who have earned an average of 90 or above in at least five classes.
SANDRA FERGUSON, JOYCE NOELL and NANCY RUTH PATTERSON, were among 25 scholastic journalists to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association. Ferguson is a former yearbook advisor at Cave Spring High School, a national yearbook judge and a workshop instructor. Noell is a yearbook adviser at Salem High School, a national yearbook judge and a workshop director and instructor. Patterson is a former yearbook adviser at William Fleming High School, current director at the CITY School for gifted and talented students and the author of several children's books.
Patterson was also inducted into the National Scholastic Journalism Hall of Fame at the University of Oklahoma. She has taught at more than 300 journalism and creative writing workshops.
COLONEL'S THEATRE COMPANY, from William Fleming High School, recently won two first-place awards at Ferrum College's Theatre Festival for One-Act Plays. The Colonel's Company was voted best theatre ensemble for their performance of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf." In addition, the best actress award was given to Heather Helm, a junior. The play's student director was Felicia Ellis, assisted by Tory Ellis, a William Fleming alumnus.
SANDRA B. BURKS has been named acting director of Magnet Schools in Roanoke. Burks, who has served as a recruiter, a marketing specialist and interim director for Magnet Schools, will oversee the coordination of 32 distinct Magnet Programs located at 12 sites. She has been employed with Roanoke City Public Schools since January 1990.
MARY BLAHA, a fourth grader at Huff Lane Micro Village, submitted the winning design for the Cox Communications Christmas card contest. Mary's red and green art work won her a certificate of recognition and a $75 savings bond, which were presented to her at a recent Huff Lane "town meeting."
PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TEAM recently competed in the Virginia High School League AAA State Volleyball Championship in Virginia Beach. The team received recognition as the Roanoke Valley District champion and the Northwest Regional state winner and received the VHSL USAir Sportsmanship Award.
The varsity team included: Stephanie Ellison, Erica Moore, Carrie Moore, Troyleena Pate, Annie Eure, Janelle Moeller, Allison Suggs, Nicky Kent, Kate Holland, Rebecca Hogan, Gene Kent, Kinsey Holder, Sarah Mercer and Kris Carter. The managers were Christy Stamback and Laura Welch. The team is coached by Marty Swan with assistant coaches Curtis Fuller, Ruth Wilkinson and Dean Barao.
ROANOKE CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS recently announced the local winners in the Giles Scholastic Swiss Tournament, which was attended by 83 chess players from Southwest Virginia and Charlotte, N.C. In the K-12 open section, individual winners were:
James Madison Middle School - Mark DiProsperis, fifth place; Mary C. Holt, seventh place; Justin Marlles, ninth place; Chris Clements, best under 800.
Patrick Henry High School - Robert Holt, sixth place
Addison Middle School - Jonathan Tanner, eighth place
Noel C. Taylor Learning Academy - Infinity West, best under 1000
Team winners were James Madison Middle School, first place and Breckinridge Middle School, third place.
In the K-7 elementary section, individual winners were:
Fishburn Park Elementary - Tom Raney, fourth place; John Mobley, fifth place;
Raleigh Court Elementary - Adam Tanner, eighth place
Woodrow Wilson Middle School - James Davis, best under 1200.
Team winners were: Fishburn Park Elementary, second place; Raleigh Court Elementary, third place.
In the beginner elementary section, individual winners were:
Addison Middle School - Josh Williamson, third place; Travis Williamson, fourth place; and Winslow Coleman, eighth place.
