SALEM HOMES TOUR DRAWS 1,000

Sponsors have described Salem's second annual historic homes as a "great success." About 1,000 people turned out to visit five Victorian-era mansions that were opened by their current owners.

Mary Hill, a spokesman for the Salem Historical Society, sponsor of the tour, said the turnout was more than double the number of people who toured houses last year.

Visitors came not only from Salem and the Roanoke Valley but also from the New River Valley with a number from North Carolina, Hill said.

All five, festively decorated houses were within the two blocks of North Broad Street and featured live instrumental and vocal music by Roanoke Valley groups. They were built about 100 years ago.

Noting that the purpose of the tour is to enhance awareness of the many historic houses in Salem; to encourage owners of old houses to keep them in good repair; and to promote the Salem Museum, Hill said a tour "definitely" will be held again next year with different houses.
