VIKINGS SHATTER GLASS 64-46

Northside exploded in the second half after taking a four-point halftime lead in the Vikings' 64-46 non-district boys' basketball victory over E.C. Glass on Friday.

Ben Peete scored seven of his 11 points in a quarter that saw homestanding Northside (2-1) take a 15-point lead. Four Vikings drained 3-pointers in the period.

Northside also took advantage of the Hilltoppers' poor ballhandling. E.C. Glass turned over the ball 24 times, compared with 14 for the Vikings.

Justin Porterfield led Northside with 16 points and Spence Peters chipped in 13. Porterfield and Peters connected on three 3-pointers each.

E.C. Glass was hampered by the absence of guard Andre Kendrick, who was sidelined by an injured ankle suffered during practice.

David Johnson led the Hilltoppers (2-2) with 10 points.

Patrick Henry 89, Heritage 65: Every player scored for Patrick Henry in its non-district win over the Pioneers at home.

Ronnie Kasey broke the Patriots' single-game assist mark of 15, set by current Virginia Tech guard Troy Manns, with 16. Kasey also scored 15 points.

Malik Shareef had 16 points to lead the Patriots (4-2), while Brooks Berry added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Boo Battle added 10 points.

Kevin Lambert led all scorers with 22 points for the Pioneers (1-2). Lambert scored all of his team's 14 third quarter points.

Roanoke Valley Christian 88, Shawsville 58: Chris Huffman scored 20 points and made four 3-pointers as the Eagles pulled away for a non-district victory over the visiting Shawnees.

Roanoke Valley Christian (5-1) made five 3-pointers in the second quarter and outscored Shawsville 28-15 behind Simon Foster's eight points. Foster finished with 12.

Eric Johnson had 11 points and eight assists for the Eagles, and Mark DeLong and Joel Nester scored 10 points each.

Larry Smith led Shawsville (1-3) with 16 points and Doug Ashworth had 12.

James River 60, Lord Botetourt 50: The Cavaliers cut a 12-point deficit to six early in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't get any closer as they fell to the Knights in non-district action in Daleville.

Jason Peery scored 12 points to lead James River (5-0) to its second victory this season over Lord Botetourt. Quincy Springs added 10.

The Cavaliers were led by Michael Gates' 18-point performance. Wesley Cox added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Lord Botetourt (0-4) shot 42 percent from the floor, one of the highest marks of the season, and was 2-for-11 from the free throw line.

Giles 76, Craig County 40: The Spartans started strong, building a 25-point halftime lead, and never relented as they cruised past the Rockets in non-district play in New Castle.

Fourteen Giles players scored, led by Josh Stevens with a dozen points. Stevens scored 10 of those as the Spartans (3-1) exploded for 24 points in the second quarter. Ben Brown added 11, nine in the fourth quarter, and Jon Keane contributed 10.

Jamie Fisher racked up a game-high 14 points for Craig County (1-2).

Girls

William Fleming 69, Franklin County 29: The Colonels (4-1, 1-0) rolled in their Roanoke Valley District opener, routing the visiting Eagles (1-5, 0-2).

Sisters Shaunarey and Renita Walker led Fleming with 14 points apiece, while Kiann Trent joined them in double figures with 12.

Penee Claiborne paced Franklin County with 13 points.

Roanoke Valley Christian 53, Grace Christian 49: Roanoke Valley Christian came from six points down in the final two minutes to knock off Grace Christian in a Blue Ridge Conference game in Staunton.

The Eagles (5-0, 3-0) were strong from the free-throw line. Rebecca Lockhart and Tina Guthrie went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter alone. Rebecca Bryant poured in 19 points and Guthrie added 14 points and seven rebounds. Krista Summers led Grace Christian (6-1) with 24 points.
