Tara Foran scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter as St.Mary's took a 15-point lead, and the visitors from Annapolis, Md., survived a last-second miss by Cave Spring's Cheryl Rhodes to win 44-43 on Saturday night in a girls' game in Dublin.
Foran and Heidi Moldenhauer, who had 10, combined for 17 of the 23 points St.Mary's (8-0) scored in the first quarter.
Cave Spring (2-1) cut its deficit to one and gained possession of a jump ball with a minute left in the game, but Rhodes missed at the buzzer.
Alyssa Redick led the Knights with 10 points.
Boys
Heritage 83, Pulaski County 66: The Pioneers opened the game with 14-0 run and the Cougars never could catch up in a non-district game in Dublin.
Heritage (2-1) led 46-23 at the half as the Pioneers shot 64 percent from the floor. Kevin Lambert led Heritage with 25 points.
The Cougars (1-1) were led by Jamar McNair's 22 points, including 12-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line, and seven assists.
Grayson County 62, Alleghany (N.C.) 51: The Blue Devils took an early lead and never looked back en route to a victory in Independence.
Grayson County (4-0) led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter. Chad Shaffner sparked the Blue Devils with 17 points.
Russ Choate scored 10 points for Alleghany (3-4).
Bath County 57, Covington Boys' Home 42: The Chargers led by 11 points at halftime and cruised to a victory over the Indians in Covington.
Bath County was led by David Buzzard's 13 points and teammate Jon Rogers' 11. Sean Riddick led the Boys' Home with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Union Grove (N.C.) 63, Gateway Christian 54: The Crusaders came up short in the final of the Greater Beckley Invitational Tournament, losing a tightly contested game in Beckley, W.Va.
The difference was poor free-throw shooting by Gateway Christian. The Crusaders missed 15 of 22 for the game and were 5-for-12 in the fourth quarter.
Andrew Phillips poured in a game-high 29 points for Union Grove.
Allen Surface led Gateway Christian with 20 points. Ryan Gordon and Monte Pence of Gateway Christian made the all-tournament team.
