RADFORD IS BLUNT AFTER DULL OUTING PLAYERS UNHAPPY WITH 87-59 VICTORY RAY COX STAFF WRITER

Some of Radford University's basketball players seemed to be a little down after the Highlanders drilled Division III Catholic 87-59 Saturday night.

Anthony Walker, the Highlanders guard, summarized bluntly:

``I don't think we played very well. They got all the loose balls. That indicates they were outhustling us. We won that game because we were bigger and more athletic than they were. If we'd been the same physically, it would have been different.''

Walker was being particularly harsh on himself and his associates considering Radford (5-2) won its third straight game and held the Cardinals (4-4) to 29.2 percent shooting (16-for-65).

The one category where Catholic had an edge was in turnovers. The Cardinals had 18, the Highlanders 23.

Whatever advantage that may have represented was negated by Radford's school-record 12 blocked shots and 45-33 bulge on the backboards. Five of those blocks were by Eric Parker, while Mike Petin had four.

Parker had career highs with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

``Just trying to get ready for Florida State [the next opponent],'' Parker said. ``It's going to be uphill from here.''

The Highlanders head off campus with a five-game swing that also includes stops at South Carolina, Marshall, and East Tennessee before the first of the year.

The pertinent numbers for Catholic in the first half were 6:38 and 19-0. The first was the length of time elapsed between a 3-point basket made by Catholic's Pat Buckley and a three-point play completed by Jeremy Borys with 1:45 left before intermission.

In the meantime, Radford went on a 19-0 run punctuated by a layup and two dunks by Parker, who led the team with 10 points and eight rebounds in 14 first-half minutes.

Parker had more work to do inside than usual because his fellow sophomore Kevin Robinson was on the bench resting a broken nose, the product of a Thursday practice collision with Jermaine Williams' elbow.

Walker had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists and Eric Bowens came off the bench for 11 points and seven rebounds. Jason Lansdown's record of scoring in his past 66 games ended when he missed all three of his shots.
