MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH DRIVE-BY IN ROANOKE

Police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a drive-by shooting in Southwest Roanoke on Friday night.

Jerry Tyrone McGeorge has been charged with attempted malicious wounding and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. No one was injured in the incident, which police say was related to drugs.

Frank Douglas Campbell Jr. and Robin Childs, each of Rorer Avenue Southwest, told police that a man fired nine times at them from a moving car about 11:45 p.m. Police found six casings from a large-caliber gun at the intersection of 13th Street and Chapman Avenue Southwest.

Shortly after the shooting, police arrested McGeorge outside his house on the 1800 block of Rorer Avenue.

In another incident, police charged a 23-year-old man with snatching a purse from a 41-year-old woman Friday as she walked to a store in Northwest Roanoke.

As Patti Thomas approached a store on Towne Square Boulevard about 8:45 p.m., a man asked her for directions to Lynchburg, police said. As Thomas explained the directions, the man grabbed her purse. The robber fled in a car, which police said they found shortly afterward on Williamson Road Northwest.

The driver of the car, John Garcia of Stuarts Draft, was charged with robbery and was held Monday in Roanoke City Jail without bond.
