HIGHLANDERS DROP COUGARS FREE THROWS KEY TO GLENVAR WIN

The Covington Cougars scored more field goals than their opponents, and they demonstrated a more balanced scoring attack.

But it wasn't enough.

Glenvar converted 25 of 31 free-throw attempts, and received a 27-point scoring effort from Josh Williamson, as the Highlanders prevailed 64-56 on the Glenvar parquet Tuesday night.

The game was the Pioneer District opener for both schools.

Covington (1-5 overall, 0-1 district) led by as many as six points (30-24) in the first half, as Glenvar's offense revolved around just three players. At halftime, only Williamson, James Williams, and Troy Henderson had scored for the Highlanders. Only one other player, Eric East, had even attempted a shot.

``We made some adjustments at halftime,'' Glenvar coach Art Lawrence said. ``We moved James Williams to the high post.''

Glenvar (3-2, 1-0) scored the first three baskets of the third quarter, and East's 3-pointer gave the Highlanders a 35-30 advantage at the 5:55 mark.

Covington rallied to tie the score at 39, 44 and 46, but in the end, Glenvar was too strong at the free-throw line.

The Highlanders made 14 of 18 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

``We shot our free throws awfully well [81 percent],'' Lawrence said.

Williamson made 13 of 15 attempts from the free-throw line. Williams finished with 15 points, mostly on inside moves.

Glenvar again played without star Corey Willis, who has recovered from an automobile accident injury, but was ill.

Brian Holloway led the Cougars with 14 points, while Erwin Twitty, Mike Barber and Robert Roman contributed 11, 11, and 10, respectively.

Covington coach Brad Morton was slapped with a technical foul at the 4:07 mark of the second half. Morton insisted he was speaking to one of his players, but Glenvar parlayed the opportunity into a three-point play and increased its lead to 55-49.

Neither team handled the ball cleanly. Glenvar was charged with 18 turnovers, two more than Covington.
