MINUTEMEN BLAST FOREST

Liberty broke open a close game in the second quarter with its defensive pressure and coasted to an 81-46 Seminole District victory over Jefferson Forest on Thursday in a boys' high school basketball game in Bedford.

Liberty (5-0) led 42-25 at halftime and never was threatened. J.J. Coles led the Minutemen with 19 points and Gregg Reynolds added 14.

Jefferson Forest (1-4) got 14 points from Zack Stinson.

Fort Chiswell 67, Rural Retreat 55: The Pioneers pulled away in the fourth quarter behind Brad Hughes, who scored 10 of his 24 points as the Wythe County rivalry was renewed.

Hughes went 8-for-12 from the foul line in the last period and finished 9-for-14 for the game. He also added eight assists and five rebounds. Anthony Watson and Heath Bralley combined for 22 points. Wayne Terry had 13 points to lead Rural Retreat, Chris Rakes added 12, and Thomas Newton 11.

Christiansburg 87, Abingdon 51: Darrell Calloway and Brian McFarland each scored 17 points as the Blue Demons rolled past the Falcons on the second day of the Marion round-robin tournament.

The teams played closely in the first quarter but Christiansburg outscored Abingdon 28-12 in the second period and coasted to victory.

Scott Basham led Abingdon with 23 points.

Grayson County 49, Marion 44: Grayson County used a big second half to down the Scarlet Hurricanes and stay undefeated at the Marion round-robin tournament.

The Blue Devils (6-0) outscored the Hurricanes (3-3) 28-15 in the second half to take the win in the second day of the tournament.

Wes Self and Chad McMillian each scored 12 points to pace Grayson County. Todd Lincoln led Marion with 13.

Chilhowie 67, Carroll County 53: Blake Mason had 29 points and Earl Allen chipped in 14 as the Warriors downed the Cavaliers in the Marion round-robin tournament.

Carroll County jumped out to a 16-10 first-quarter lead but Chilhowie poured it on in the second half, outscoring the Cavaliers 27-7 en route to victory.

With 19 points, Earl Johnson was the lone double-digit scorer for Carroll County.

George Wythe 66, Holston 51:George Wythe outscored Holston by 10 in the third quarter as the Maroons downed the Cavaliers in a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.

Brian Barnes led undefeated George Wythe with a game-high 22 points, 12 of which came in the third period. Ted Ring and Freddy Moses each scored 14.

Brandon Matheny and Travis Owens were the leading scorers for Holston with 15 each. Johnny Widner added 14.

Harrisonburg 69, Rockbridge County 64: At Lexington, Tristan Barber and Robbie Roadcap combined for 45 points as the Blue Streaks held off the Wildcats in a non-district game.

Harrisonburg led cold-shooting Rockbridge 29-16 at halftime only to see the hosts charge back to take a 46-45 lead early in the fourth quarter. Barber, who had 25 points, then keyed a 12-0 spurt to put the game away.

All but 14 of Lexington's points were scored by Jaymie Terrell (26) and Ricky Wright (24).
