EAGLES SOAR PAST RAIDERS

Roanoke Valley Christian swept to a 16-2 advantage out of the chute and never led by fewer than 11 in its 86-58 Virginia Independent Conference high school boys' basketball victory over North Cross on Thursday.

The Eagles bombarded the host Raiders with nine 3-point goals, four of those from Mark DeLong, three from Eric Johnson, and two from Mark Arbogast. Arbogast finished with 18 points, Johnson added 14, and DeLong chipped in 12 as RVC won its seventh game in eight outings and improved to 3-1 in the conference.

Bradley Densmore scored 17 points and Brian Whitaker added 14 rebounds and six assists for North Cross. The Raiders' season-opening losing streak grew to four, two of those coming in the conference.

GW-Danville 67, Cave Spring 51: It was deja vu for Cave Spring. Less than 10 days after losing by 16 points to GW-Danville at home, the Knights fell again to the Eagles in a non-district game, this time on the road.

The Eagles (6-0) used their size inside to outrebound Cave Spring 32-23 and took control of the game at the free-throw line. Danville was 19-of-29 from the line and allowed the Knights (4-3) to the line only eight times, of which they only made three.

Six-foot-five Tyrone Robertson led Danville with 16 points, eight of which came in the third quarter. Robertson, who weighs 260 pounds, presented match-up problems for the Knights. Robertson also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Nathan Poole chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Lamont Stevens contributed 14 points.

Billy Frantz scored a season-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Knights (4-3) in the losing effort. Olan McClain poured in a dozen points, and leading scorer Jeff Lang was held to 11 points, seven below his average.

William Fleming 60, Heritage 35: Visiting William Fleming smothered Heritage with defense in the second half and James Stokes scored 26 points to go with 13 rebounds to fuel a non-district victory.

Charles Burnette weighed in with 11 points and six rebounds for the Colonels (5-2).

Fleming dominated Heritage 43-19 on the backboards.

Girls

William Fleming 46, Heritage 32: The Colonels built a double-figure lead in the first half and cruised to the non-district victory in Lynchburg.

Fleming (5-2) was led by Kiann Trent with 12 points, Shaunarey Walker had 11 and Renita Walker contributed 10. The Colonels held Heritage to 14 points in the first half.

Tuesday's game

Roanoke Valley Christian 70, Lynchburg Christian 56: Joel Nester's 19 points and nine rebounds led the Eagles to a VIC victory Tuesday night at Lynchburg.
