HIS ABSENCE 'HAS LEFT A VOID'

Andrew Lewis Middle School Principal Jerry Campbell said the school staff's social committee had planned on giving to the Good Neighbors Fund this year.

But they hadn't planned on dedicating their contribution the way they did.

On Nov. 17, Monroe Johnson, the building manager at Andrew Lewis, died unexpectedly. He was 52. The school's staff made its donation in his memory.

Johnson had worked as a school custodian for 26 years and was building manager for the last five years. He was well-liked by students and faculty. The school hasn't been the same without him, Campbell said.

"Mr. Johnson has left a void in our hearts," a letter enclosed with the contribution said. "His absence is felt by the entire staff."

Johnson took his work seriously and was loyal to the Salem school system, Campbell said.

Even though he didn't drive, Johnson always found a ride to check on the school during snow days. When everyone else was at home, Johnson had to be there, Campbell said.

"We thought a good deal of the man."
