Workers at the long-distance information center operated by CFW Information Service Inc. in Clifton Forge voted Friday in favor of representation by the United Paper Workers International Union.
Glenn Anglin, a field worker for the union, said he was "exhausted but happy" after the daylong meeting culminated in a 65-60 vote for the union. Low wages and a lack of dignity on the work floor led the workers to ask for union representation, Anglin said.
"We're disappointed, but we respect the decision of our employees," said Rory Fallato, corporate marketing manager for CFW Communications Co. of Waynesboro, the parent of CFW Information Services. The center, which provides regional directory assistance services under a contract with AT&T, has been open less than a year.
"We'll assess the situation and move forward from there," he said.
Because the federal government shutdown has closed offices of the National Labor Relations Board, certification of the vote will be delayed, Anglin said. Negotiations between the union and the company likely won't begin before February.
The Paper Workers filed a petition with the NLRB in November for the election. The workers had discussed joining the Communications Workers of America but turned to the Paper Workers because of their strong presence in the Alleghany County area, Anglin said.
