COUGARS BARELY HOLD OFF CELTICS

Pulaski County overcame the loss of its top scorer to an injury, holding off Roanoke Catholic 62-61 on Friday night in a high school boys' basketball game in Dublin.

With Jamar McNair sidelined indefinitely because of a stress fracture in one of his feet, the Cougars had trouble replacing his 20 points per game. They started two freshmen, Justin Teek and Dorian Hendricks, and got balanced scoring. Teek led the way with 12 points, Derrick Hunter had 11 and Brad Dalton and Hendricks added 10 each.

Pulaski County (3-1) led by at least seven points for most of the second half, but the Celtics cut their deficit to three in the closing seconds and had the ball. They missed a 3-pointer and hit a follow shot at the buzzer to make the final margin one.

Roanoke Catholic stayed in the game by hitting 16 of 23 free throws while the Cougars were going 5-for-11 from the line. Brendan McCarthy led the Celtics with 19 points, Chris Lothes had 16 and Chad Wall scored 11 - nine of those on 3-pointers.

Pocahontas County 62, Alleghany 56: At the Dick Gunnoe Memorial Christmas Tournament at Greenbrier East High in Lewisburg, W.Va., the Warriors blew a 14-point intermission lead, but still scrapped back for the victory and third place in the tournament.

Pocahontas County got a combined six 3-pointers from Chris Cole and Jason Rolleston, two of the four Warriors who scored in double figures. Cole had 15 points and Rolleston 14 .

Alleghany (1-4) was down 30-16 at the break, but scrambled back behind Casey Burks, who scored nine of his 19 points in two possessions. After a double technical on the Warriors, Burks made all four shots then drilled a 3-pointer after the subsequent inbounds play. On the next trip down the floor, he sank a pair of free throws.

Giles 84, Bland 67: Four players scored in double figures as the Spartans rolled past the Rockets in a non-district game in Pearisburg.

Josh Stephens led Giles (4-1) with 24 points. Robbie Claytor added 16 and Aaron Myers and John King each had 11.

The Spartans took a 6-point lead in the first quarter and gradually pulled away, never relinquishing the lead.

John Thompson led Bland (1-1) with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Jon Newberry added 10 points.

Bath County 64, Riverheads 49: The Chargers stayed unbeaten with a non-district win at Hot Springs.

Jon Rogers, who scored a game-high 17 points, made a 3-pointer to start Bath County (4-0) on a 12-2 run that gave the Chargers a 21-14 first-quarter lead. Riverheads (0-3), which led by five early on, never led again.

Adam Grist scored 15 and Matt Williams had 12 for Bath.

Marion Invitational

Abingdon 58, Carroll County 44: Joe Waters and Wes Basham poured on the points and Abingdon beat the Cavaliers to leave them empty-handed in the Bank of Marion-Bobby's Printing-Pepsi Holiday Classic at Marion High.

Waters pumped in 22 points and Basham 18 as the Falcons won for the first time in three outings at the six-team round-robin tournament. Ryan Morris and Justin Iroler collaborated on 16 points for Carroll County (1-7).

Grayson County 65, Chilhowie 58: At the Bank of Marion-Bobby's Printing-Pepsi Holiday at Marion High, Wes Self scored 25 of his 32 points in the second half, 14 of that coming in the fourth quarter, as the Blue Devils survived a stout challenge to remain undefeated.

The game was nip and tuck until Self converted a three-point play with 50 second left to give the Devils (8-0) what turned out to be an insurmountable lead. Nine of Self's points came from 3-point range.

Blake Mason had 18 points, Earl Allen 16, and Jarrod Thompson 11 for the Warriors (4-3), who lost two of three at the round-robin affair. Mason and Thompson each had a pair of triples.

Christiansburg 65, Marion 63: Darrell Calloway's rebound and subsequent stickback of a wild Jesse McHose shot with 1.4 seconds left gave the Blue Demons a thriller of an overtime victory in the last game of the Bank of Marion-Bobby's Printing-Pepsi Holiday Classic at Marion High.

Calloway had 21 points for the once-beaten on the season Demons, who joined Grayson County in going 3-0 in the round-robin tournament. Calloway also forced the overtime when he went coast-to-coast to score after rebounding a missed free throw by Marion freshman Austin Dexter with 12 seconds left.

Brian Porter scored all 18 of his points from 3-point range for Christiansburg. Aaron Sage and Todd Lincoln had 15 each for Marion (3-4).

Thursday's game

Greenbrier East 82, Alleghany 48: At the opening round of the Dick Gunnoe Memorial Christmas Tournament at Lewisburg, W.Va., host Greenbrier East forced 34 Alleghany turnovers and romped behind a combined 28 points from Herschall Godfrey and Seneca Wilmer.
