JIMMY STEWART INJURED ACTOR, 87, IS OK AFTER FALL IN HOME

Hoping to be home for the holidays: Jimmy Stewart.

The star of ``It's a Wonderful Life'' and ``The Philadelphia Story'' suffered a minor head injury when he tripped and fell in his home Thursday night. He left one hospital early Friday but later went to another for observation.

``When you're 87 years old, you take a little more care of yourself than when you're 27 years old,'' said longtime publicist John Strauss.

The fall occurred late Thursday in Stewart's Beverly Hills home.

``Somebody sent him a plant, and he didn't know it was there. Apparently he tripped over it and hit his head on a table leg,'' Strauss said. ``But he's fine.''

Stewart was first taken by ambulance to Century City Hospital and was treated for a minor head injury, said nursing supervisor Rita Dana.

``He came in at about 10 p.m. He was only in the emergency room, was evaluated and was sent away,'' Dana said.

Strauss said Stewart, accompanied by his doctor, then went to St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica for observation.

Stewart was expected to be in St. John's until Sunday, said hospital spokeswoman Lindi Funston.

Carolers were in front of Stewart's home as he was taken out.

``We decided to go out and look at Christmas lights, and we also thought it would be a kick to go to Jimmy Stewart's house and stand on the porch and sing a Christmas carol and see if he would come out,'' witness Jerry Holderman told KCAL-TV.

``Well, when we arrived at his house, there were two fire department trucks and they were wheeling him out,'' Holderman said.
