EXPRESS LOSES 5TH STRAIGHT

THE RICHMOND Renegades keep rolling with a 4-2 win in a fight-marred game.

Two teams headed in opposite directions each established new franchise records.

The Richmond Renegades extended their unbeaten streak to a franchise record-tying 16 games with a 4-2 victory over the Roanoke Express at the Richmond Coliseum in East Coast Hockey League action Friday night. Roanoke (16-14-0) lost for a franchise-record fifth straight game.

Richmond (20-3-5) has not lost in regulation since a 5-3 defeat by South Carolina on November 12th - going 11-0-5 in that 16-game span.

After a scoreless opening 17 minutes of the game, play was stopped when a pane of glass became dislodged behind the Richmond net. After a regular intermission to fix the glass, the Renegades owned the period's final 2:33.

After an errant clearing attempt by Express defenseman Michael Smith, Steve Carpenter's right point shot hit a skate and caromed directly to Jay Murphy. Murphy surprised Express goalie Matt DelGuidice with a quick snap shot through the pads at 10:04 for a 1-0 Richmond lead.

Tim Christian tied the game for the Express early in the second, by roofing a backhander over Richmond goalie Grant Sjerven's right shoulder with an Express power play winding down. DelGuidice, who was brilliant in net for the Expres despite the loss, started the play with a half-ice pass up the middle to Michael Smith, who sent Christian in.

The Renegades scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. Brian Goudie converted a fourth rebound after DelGuidice stopped several drives in sprawling fashion for his third goal of the year at 9:39. Then, with Richmond on a power play, Dmitri Pankov pushed a loose puck under DelGuidice from the side of the crease at 12:45.

The third period, marred with three of the seven fights in the game, was highlighted by RIchmond's Kurt Mallet's 10th goal of the year - his sixth against Roanoke - on yet another multi-rebound effort by the Renegades. Christian rounded out the scoring with his second power play goal of the game at 19:34.

The Express return home tonight to face off at the Roanoke Civic Center against the Hampton Roads Admirals.
