A Boones Mill woman was carrying a gallon jug of kerosene Saturday afternoon when she tripped and splashed the fuel on an electric heater, causing a flash fire.
Evelyn Scott suffered second- and third-degree burns to her arms, chest and face from the fire that killed three of her four dogs and destroyed an outbuilding, according to Franklin County Deputy Fire Marshal Ben Cook.
Cook said Scott, 84, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and later flown to the University of Virginia Hospital's burn center. She was listed in critical condition Saturday night, according to a hospital administrator.
A Boones Mill Volunteer Fire Department member was driving by Scott's home on Winding Way Drive about 4:15 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the 10-by-10-foot building behind the house. He phoned for help; when crew members arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.
The building housed four dogs, one of which escaped the building with minor burns, Cook said.
Cook estimated $1,000 in damage to the building and its contents.
