SOCKLESS MAN SOUGHT IN LYNCHBURG THEFT TRY

Police are looking for a man who tried to rob a store in Lynchburg.

The man walked into the Campbell Minute Store about 9:50 p.m. Thursday, said Lynchburg Police Cmdr. R.J. Morrison.

The man approached the clerk and said ``This is a stick-up,'' Morrison said. He motioned that he had a gun, but never produced one, Morrison said.

At first, the clerk thought it was a joke and started laughing, said a cashier at the store, who was not on duty at the time.

Several cars drove into the store's parking lot, distracting the would-be robber. A nearby store employee leaped over the counter and started punching the man, police reports said.

The stockperson threw him against the wall and the would-be thief ran out the door, minus his hat, a sock and two bags that he had brought into the store, the cashier said.
