BISHOP, Julian E., 80, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 25, 1995 in the Roanoke City Nursing Home following a long illness. Mr. Bishop was a retired employee of the Norfolk and Western Railway. He was born in Eggleston on August 11, 1915, and was a son of the late James T. Bishop and Matt ie Barger Bishop. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and George Lake, Culpeper; one brother, H. Randolph Bishop, Eggleston; one sister, Dorothy Compton, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Burk and Meredith Burk, Culpeper, Brian Burk, Alexandria. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. CALLAWAY, Patrick Henry, died on Thursday evening, December 21, 1995 at the age of 100. He was a member of the faculty of the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. for 70 years. He was a resident of Goodwin House in Alexandria where he lived after leaving Episcopal's campus in 1988. Before he retire at the age of 93, Mr. Callaway taught, coached and was mentor to thousands of students during his tenure at the school. Mr. Callaway was born in 1895 in Nelson County, Va., graduated from the University of Virginia in 1916, and that same year joined the faculty of the Episcopal High School. He remained at the school until 1988, with the exception of a two-year hiatus which included serving with the U.S. Ambulance Service in France in World War I and receiving The Croix de Guerre for heroism under fire. Mr. Callaway taught mathematics and Spanish, and he served as dean of students a nd varsity baseball coach. He had been an outstanding pitcher on the U.Va. baseball team, and his teams at EHS compiled a remarkable record of 112 wins and 67 losses over a 15-year period, including three undefeated seasons. For many years, he advised the school's Honor Committee in upholding the Honor Code, the oldest among secondary schools in the nation and Episcopal's most cherished tradition. The Patrick Henry Callaway Chapel, completed in 1990, stands on the school campus as a memorial to a man who was a source of inspiration to generations of students and to all who knew him. The chapel is one of only a few Episcopal churches in the United States named after a lay person. Episcopal's Headmaster, Lee S. Ainslie, Jr., paid tribute to Mr. Callaway during a black-tie dinner which celebrated his 100th birthday on February 15, 1995. Mr. Ainslie said, ""Mr. Callaway was a teacher of great compassion. As dean of students, he was known for his firm but fair approach. He was a man whom no one can ever remember having raised his voice and who always had a word of praise and an encouraging comment for students and teachers."" Survivors include three nieces, Mr. Stuart Chase of Deerfield, Mass., Mrs. Elsie Spencer of Rowanberry, Va, and Mr. Lucille Halderman of Afton, Va.; a nephew George C. Callaway of Charlottesville, Va. A graveside burial service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 1995, at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria. A memorial service will be held in the Patrick Henry Callaway Chapel at Episcopal High School on Saturday, December 23, 1995 at 2 pm. CRITZER, Aubrey Daniel II, (``Dan""), 44, of 1639 Granby St., Roanoke, died at his family resident at Route 2, Box 622, Afton, Va., Monday morning, December 25, 1995. He was born in Waynesboro on Friday, August 31, 1951, a son of Mrs. Ethel Critzer of Afton and the late Aubrey D. Critzer. He was a member of the Rodes United Methodist Church and was President and owner of Amcon Incorporated of Roanoke, Va. Mr. Critzer served on the board of National Steel Erectors and a number of rigging and steel organizations. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by two daughters, Erika Nicole Critzer and Nora Catherine Critzer, both of Arrington, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Buddy (Audrey) Dulaney of Nellysford, and Mrs. Roger (Carol) Wood of Afton, Va.; as well as two nephews, Melvin C. Small Jr. of Staunton and Mark D. Small of Nellysford; and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, three great-nieces and one great-nephew. Services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rodes United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Whitney Critzer and the Rev. John Chafee, with burial following in the church cemetery. MILLER, Frank Perry (``Pete''), 71, of Blacksburg, died Monday, December 25, 1995 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born in Roanoke on March 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank and Gola Echols Miller. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marine Corp. He received the VA Army National Guard Commendation Award for 21 years of meritorious service, (from 1959-1980 He also was Platoon Sergeant of Company B, First Battalion 116th Infantry, VA Army National Guard. He retired from Corning Glass Works. Mr. Miller has been a life-long member of First Wesleyan Church, Blacksburg. ROSEBERRY, J.J., 85, of Abingdon, died Friday, December 22, 1995. Funeral was Tuesday, 2 p.m., Abingdon Bible Church. Campbell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
SANDIDGE, Myrtle Gilbert, 83, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, December 26, 1995, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mrs. Sandidge was born August 17, 1912, in Buena Vista, a daughter of the late Hayes Letcher Gilbert and Katie Vest Gilbert. She was a member of the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mrs. Sandidge was preceded in death by a son, Elwood G. Sandidge; a granddaughter, Jill Denise Wood, and a great-grandson, Joshua Burch. Surviving are her husband, Herman G. Sandidge of Buena Vista; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty S. and Norman Pelter of Buena Vista, Sylvia S. and Donald Burch of Lexington, and Shirley S. and Charlie Mack Wood of Glasgow; one sister, Ruby G. Huffman of Buena Vista; a half brother, Henry L. Gilbert of Buena Vista; six grandchildren, Alan Burch, Todd Burch, Chris Wood, Mitzi Harris, Stacy Wood and Pamela Ramsey, and a great-grandson, Zachary Burch. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 1995, in the Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. W. David Bain officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Buena Vista First Aid Crew or the Buena Vista Fire Department. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Service, Buena Vista.
SECREST, Bobby C., 58, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, December 26, 1995. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday, McKee Funeral Chapel.
SIMPKINS, Dora Hylton, 91, of Hiwassee, died Monday, December 25, 1995, in the Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Blacksburg. She was born in Meadows of Dan on October 9, 1904, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hylton. She was a member of the Hiwassee Church of the Brethren for 52 years, and was preceded in death by her husband, Noah J. Simpkins. Surviving are her children, Archie J. Simpkins, Pulaski, Stella S. Altizer, Pulaski, Clarence W. Simpkins, Jonesboro, Ga., Willard C. Simpkins, Pulaski, Millard L. Simpkins, Pulaski,, Joel T. Simpkins, Pulaski, Paul H. Simpkins, Buchanan; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Burial will follow in the Trail Cemetery, Hiwassee. Visiting will be Wednesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski.
SINK, Janie Madlene, 71, of Goodview died Monday, December 25, 1995. She was the widow of, Willie L. Sink and retired from Singer Furniture Company. Surviving are a son, Charles J. Carr, Goodview; step-daughter, Minnie P. Taylor, Roanoke; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 1 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. SJOGREN, Nancy Kathryn, 90, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 1995. She was a retired photographer from General Motors Corporation and was preceded in death by her husband, Eric A. Sjogren. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Robert G. Garrett Jr. and his wife, Alice, Roanoke, Sandra Stephens, Thaxton, Libby Dungan and her husband, Pat, Roanoke; a special friend, Lisa Persinger, Bedford. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Friday, December 29, at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Frank C. Preston officiating. Interment in Evergreen Burial Park. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie S. and Frank ""Eddie"" Leftwich, Vinton; son and daughter-in-law, Carl W. and Marjorie W. St. Clair, Roanoke; granddaughter, Chrysee S. Meador, Roanoke; great-grandson, Matthew D. Meador, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services w ill be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday December 28, 1995 in Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold C. Lewis officiating.
