COLLEGE NOTES

REBEKAH D. FENZEL, daughter of Lawrence and Ella Fenzel of Roanoke, has received a $1,000 Academic Achievement Scholarship from Eastern Mennonite University.

WENDELL K. SCOTT of BellSouth Communication Systems of Roanoke recently graduated from Duke University's weekend executive MBA program.

The weekend program is designed for middle- to upper-level managers who attend classes on Friday and Saturday of alternate weekends for 20 months.

KELLY DIERKER, daughter of Judith and Richard Dierker of Roanoke, has been named a Student Government Association senator at Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.

Dierker, an English and business administration major, also has been selected as an advancement ambassador. She will assist with the planning of special events, board meetings and fund-raising efforts.

VALERIE M. GLYNN, daughter of Curtis and Helen Glynn of Vinton, was among 34 freshman selected for the Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania Honors Program. Glynn is a business major.

NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE recently announced the names of Rooanoke students who were selected for "Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges." They are: Suellen Adams, Frances Covington, Virgie Underwood, Sunday Callegari, Yen Hoai Lieu, Sharon Franklin, Herawati Lunardi, William Deitz, Dana Podell, Lori Grady and Byron Coffey.

CAMERON TREY SHARTZER and CARL D. CRESS, both of Roanoke, recently were inducted into the Radford University chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honor society for business majors.

ROANOKE COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students named to the 1996 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." They are: Matthew Bockner, Catherine Ferguson, Stacey Handy, Anthony Hopper, Patrick McCarthy and Sheryl McCoy, all of Roanoke; Kathleen Roberts of Salem; Jennifer Mullin of Vinton; Nancy Beaman, formerly of Vinton; Jennifer Hoback of Hollins; Karen St.Clair of New Castle; and Mary Whitlock of Troutville.

SHARON H. BRADLEY and JORDAN B. RODGERS were selected by the Virginia Western Educational Foundation to receive McFarland Scholarships. Bradley, in her second year of the general studies program at Virginia Western, will receive $700 to assist with tuition during the 1995-96 academic year. Rodgers, also a second year general studies major, will receive $300.

NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents named to the dean's list. They are: Trina Alachnowicz, Sunday CallegarI, Susan Cassell, Byron Coffey, Richard Craddock, Brenda Dulaney, Lisa Firebaugh, Sharon Franklin, Lori Grady, Donna Gravely, Natalie Green, Alan Lawson, Dana Podell, Sandra Reinhardt, Donna Ross, Theresa Sloan and Monica Washington.

LAUREN WILLSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Willson of Roanoke, was recently inducted into Phi Eta Sigma national honor society at Washington and Lee University, where she is a sophomore. The society honors students who complete their freshman year with a 3.5 grade-point average.

COURTNEY ALLISON TUCKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tucker of Roanoke, has been named to the 1996 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges." Tucker is a senior at Washington and Lee University.

WILLIAM SCOTT THOMASSON of Roanoke and JOHN LEE REYNOLDS IV of Salem, both Hampden-Sydney students, were selected to appear in the 1996 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Thomasson is the son of Judy N. Ross; Reynolds is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Reynolds III.

ROBIN M. KYLE and CHARLITA R. KASEY, both of Roanoke, were awarded Bridging the Gap scholarships at Virginia Western Community College. Kyle is a certified nursing assistant and is in her second year of the radiography program. Kasey is a first-year science major and hopes to become a physical therapist.

The two $500 scholarships were initiated by Lawrence H. Hamlar and are given annually to African-American students at Virginia Western.

SHANNON RICHARD BASHAM, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray S. Basham of Roanoke, was awarded a Presidential Fellows Scholarship at High Point University. Selection for the $2,500 renewable award was based on scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Basham is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

JONATHAN A. TURNER, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Turner of Roanoke, was awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship at Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio. The scholarship recognizes excellent secondary school achievement and potential for high achievement in college. Turner is senior at Roanoke Valley Christian School.

AMY WOODWARD, a Salem resident who attends Williams College, displayed art in an exhibit at the Goodrich Gallery in Williamstown, Mass. The exhibit of student artists included drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, digitized images and text.
