IN SCHOOL

THE SALEM HIGH SCHOOL THESPIANS recently won first place in the Region III Theatre Festival at Magna Vista High School. The winning one-act play, "Eleemosynary," by Lee Blessing, was directed by Salem drama instructor Rachel Sailer. Individual awards were given to all three cast members: senior Emily Collier and juniors Krista Kier and Corryne McCluskey.

STUDENT WINNERS of the Expressions writing contest, sponsored by The Alliance for Excellence of Virginia Western Community College and the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority, have been announced.

Lafawn Johnson won first place in the 7-10 age group for a short story/nonfiction, "My Daddy."

In the 11-13 age group, the winners were: Chris Finney, first for short story/fiction for "The Sleeping Ones"; Cherie Burnett, second for short story/fiction, "The Magical Forest"; and Sara Allam, third for poetry, "Come Together."

In the 14-17 age group, the winners were: Dana H. Plummer, first, poetry, "Shadows of the Mind"; James Sapp, second, short story/fiction, second, "The Once in a Lifetime Opportunity"; Ishia M. Early, third, short story/nonfiction, "My Education."

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE has announced that cadets Michael S. McFadden, Robert T. Prince and Phetsavanh Xayavong of Blue Ridge and Dallas R. Richards of Roanoke are included in the the 1996 edition of "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges."

McFadden, a graduate of Roanoke Catholic School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McFadden; Prince, a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Prince Jr.

Xayavong, a graduate of Staunton River High School, is the son of Sivilay and Kham Xayavong; Richards, also a Staunton River graduate, is the son of James W. Richards and Ruth E. Hawkins.

SETH MORGAN WOOD, a senior at Northside High School, recently won the Harry F. Byrd Jr. Leadership Award and received a $2,500 scholarship.

Wood is one of 11 students from across the state, one senior from each congressional district, to take home the prize. The award was established in 1994 with a $1 million endowment from Byrd, a former U.S. senator. Winners are chosen based on academic achievement, excellence of character, leadership qualities and devotion to duty. This year, 290 students were nominated for the award.
