Gary Brumfield, a Christiansburg police officer for 21 years, has been named the department's new lieutenant of investigations.
Brumfield replaces Doug Marrs, who becomes sheriff of Montgomery County on Jan. 1.
Brumfield, 44, spent 13 years as a patrol officer and recently completed eight years in investigations. He was promoted to sergeant three years ago.
He was a charter member of the Montgomery County Drug Task Force and he taught juvenile law at the New River Police Academy for eight years.
His community activities have included serving on the New River district committee of Boy Scouts of America. He was a scoutmaster for 10 years. He is president of the Christiansburg Demon Athletic Booster Club and a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
A 1969 graduate of Christiansburg High School, Brumfield attended Wytheville Community College and graduated from the New River Police Academy. He is retired from the U.S. Army Reserves.
Brumfield is married and has one son and two daughters.
"I'm a hometown boy and love Christiansburg," he said.
Brumfield's promotion created another vacancy in the investigations division of the Police Department. That spot will be filled by Thomas E. Lawson, an 18-year police veteran.
Lawson joined the Christiansburg Police Department about two years ago after working for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Giles County Sheriff's Office and the Pearisburg Police Department.
He served with the Unites States Marine Corps, teaches defensive tactics and is a general instructor for Virginia police academies.
