Delta Air Lines sparked a fare war by offering as much as 50 percent off domestic tickets to boost traffic in the slow winter season.
The Atlanta-based airline said it cut by 30 percent to 50 percent the price of tickets bought by Jan. 10 for travel in the United States, Canada and Mexico from Jan. 2 to Feb. 29.
The move prompted matching discounts by Trans World, American, Continental, Northwest and USAir.
The tickets must be bought seven days in advance and include a Saturday night stay.
The discount means Delta's round-trip fare from Atlanta to San Francisco fell 30 percent to $505 from the 21-day advance-purchase price of $721. Tickets for round-trip Dallas-Seattle flights were halved to $359.
