GED tests offered

CHRISTIANSBURG - The General Education Development (GED) tests for the high school equivalency certificate will be offered on Jan. 17 and Jan. 19, from 4 to 9 p.m, at Christiansburg High School, Independence Boulevard, Christiansburg.

Sessions are limited to 25 people. Registration is on a first come, first served basis at the Montgomery County School Board Office, 200 Junkin St., Christiansburg. Apply in person from Jan. 8 through Jan. 12, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applicants must be 18 years of age and a permanent resident of Virginia or have resided in the state for 30 days. A picture identification is required at registration.

A fee is $25 for the battery of five tests (social studies, literature and arts, science, mathematics and writing skills). Re-tests costs $5 each. Should an applicant fail to achieve a passing score on one or more of the tests, a re-test may be given, but a 60-day waiting period is required between tests.

Christmas-tree pickup

CHRISTIANSBURG - Christiansburg's Public Works Department will pick up discarded Christmas trees on regular garbage pickup days from Jan. 8 through Jan. 12.

Residents should place their trees at the edge of the street along with their garbage before 8 a.m. on the pickup day.

Residents also may take their trees to the recycling center in the parking lot of New River Valley Mall near Peebles by Jan. 13.

Civil War discussion

BLACKSBURG - Programs on the Civil War featuring Virginia Tech History Professor James I. Robertson highlight Blacksburg's public access television channel WTOB Jan. 4 through 11.

Robertson will discuss the role of chaplains Jan. 4 at 7:45 p.m., and at 8:20 p.m., he will give the keynote address from Tech's third annual Civil War weekend. Both programs are recorded.

On Jan. 8, the station will air "Bite the String Snake," a locally produced program on 500 years of cultural displacement since Columbus, performed by Tech theater students.

On Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. Tech theater arts professor Barbara Carlisle will discuss women in performing arts, writing female characters and the future of theater.

Arthritis support group

RADFORD - Radford Community Hospital is sponsoring a new arthritis support group.

The group's first meeting will be Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m. in the Norwood Professional Building on Norwood Street.

The group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Meetings will cover how to cope with arthritis, and problems and concerns associated with the condition.

Meetings are open to people with arthritis, family and friends.

Contracts awarded

SALEM - Nine contracts for improving roads and bridges in the 12-county Salem transportation district were awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board during its monthly meeting on Dec. 21, in Arlington.

The contracts awarded for Salem District which includes Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties was $4.2 million.

In Montgomery County, one-half mile of Virginia 626 will be paved with asphalt starting at Virginia 11 and ending south of Virginia 756.
