Roanoke Express goalie Matt DelGuidice, who was called up by the Albany (N.Y.) River Rats of the American Hockey League earlier this week, will be re-joining the Express before tonight's game at Charlotte.
Albany, a farm club of the New Jersey Devils, called up DelGuidice to serve as a backup. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello learned of DelGuidice after asking Raleigh IceCaps coach Kurt Kleinendorst for a list of some of the top players in the East Coast Hockey League. The IceCaps are affiliated with the Devils.
The call-up left the Express with just one goalie - Daniel Berthiaume, who has been hampered by back problems lately. Rick Kelley, a player in the city's adult league, was signed as an emergency backup.
Express general manager Pierre Paiement called Lamoriello on Wednesday and asked that DelGuidice be returned.
``I told him, `I want my goaltender back,''' said Paiement. ``We were in no position to loan a goalie. [Express coach] Frank [Anzalone] tried to call me on Tuesday and ask what we should do, but he couldn't get hold of me. He didn't have much choice [except] to let Matt go.''
