WILLIAM BYRD TOPS NORTHSIDE IN TOURNAMENT

A strong inside game proved to be more than enough to offset an outside game as William Byrd downed Northside 73-66 for third place in the NationsBank Holiday Hoops Classic on Thursday at the Salem Civic Center.

First, it was Chris Childress and then it was 6-foot-4 Kevin Stump for the Terriers (7-1) as they rebounded from an upset loss in the semifinals to Salem.

Northside (3-4) countered with strong 3-point shooting, especially from Justin Porterfield, who had three long shots on the way to a 23-point game.

After a close first half, Childress scored on a layup and sank a free throw to spark a 13-3 run as the Terriers opened a 45-35 lead midway through the third quarter.

Porterfield got the Vikings back in the game. He drew an offensive foul and capped an 11-0 spurt with a 3-pointer that gave Northside a 46-45 lead.

Byrd regained the lead for good on a 3-point shot by Chris Blackwell that made it 51-49 with 5:14 left.

Then Childress and Stump took over as Byrd opened a 64-55 lead with just over a minute left to clinch the victory. Childress and Stump combined for 42 points.

William Fleming 59, Glenvar 26: The Group AAA Colonels were too strong inside for the Group A Highlanders in the battle for fifth place.

Center James Stokes, a 6-5 senior, led Fleming (7-3) with 20 points. He had four baskets and two free throws in the second period as the Colonels vaulted to a 27-14 lead at intermission.

Sterling Tate, a 6-6 senior, added 10 points. In the second quarter, he and Stokes accounted for all of Fleming's points.

Glenvar (4-4) saw leading scorer Cory Willis shut down with six points.

Franklin County 54, Patrick Henry 53: In an All-Roanoke Valley District battle for seventh place, the Eagles came out on top thanks to 19 points by K.C. Hancock. Franklin County (2-8) took the lead late and survived a missed outside shot by PH for the victory.

The Patriots (4-6) were led by Devon ``Boo'' Battle with 17 points.
