ALBEMARLE TOPS KNIGHTS 61-50

Albemarle led by seven points at halftime and turned to the 3-pointer in the second half Thursday to finish off Cave Spring 61-50 in a semifinal game of the Albemarle Invitational boys' basketball tournament in Charlottesville.

The Patriots (8-1) held a 33-26 advantage at the start of the second half. From there, they sank five straight 3-pointers to start the third quarter and take a 22-point lead.

The Knights (5-4) battled back, finishing the period on a 10-2 run, but could not muster up enough in the fourth quarter.

Jamel Ross led the Patriots with a game-high 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Mark Bressan was the main deep threat for Albemarle, sinking four 3-pointers en route to 18 points. Lionel Jackson added 10 points for Albemarle.

Cave Spring's leading scorer, Jeff Lang, was held to 14 points, four under his average. Senior shooting guard Billy Frantz chipped in 12 points, and Alex Phillips added 10.

The Knights take on Western Albemarle tonight at 7 in the third-place consolation game. Albemarle follows in the championship game against Charlottesville.

Floyd County 89, Pocahontas 34: The Buffaloes bolted to a 40-14 halftime lead and never glanced back as they left Pocahontas in the dust at the Xpress Market Classic.

Travis Cantrell was named the tournament's most valuable player, as he led the Buffaloes to two victories. He pumped in a game-high 15 points and dished out five assists. Derrick Saunders chipped in 14 points, seven steals, and seven rebounds. Adam Harris also scored 14 points.

Carlisle 105, Roanoke Catholic 80: Carlisle led by 22 at halftime and held its lead in the second half as it cruised to a win over Roanoke Catholic and evened its record in the Xpress Market Classic.

The Chiefs (7-1) bombed away from the outside, connecting on 11 3-pointers as they rolled over the Celtics. Joseph McClinton and Bryant Redd each sank four 3-pointers, leading Carlisle's five double-digit scorers.

Redd was the high scorer for Carlisle with a game-high 28, and McClinton poured in 27. Lamont Franklin chipped in 15, Chad Martin added 13, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Marty Stanley had 11 points.

Terran Reed and Alex Dixon each pumped in 20 points to lead the Celtics. Brendan McCarthy added 14 and Aki Alzubadi had 10 for Catholic.

Girls

Cave Spring 38, Durham (N.C.) Academy 31: Jackie Banks led Cave Spring into the final of the Chapel Hill Christmas Invitational with a victory over Durham Academy in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Banks, who scored 11 points off the bench in Wednesday's opening round win, was the game's high scorer with 11 points. The Knights (6-1) took advantage inside with the 6-foot-1 Banks and teammates Lisa Bryan (6-4) and Cheryl Rhodes (6-0) pounding the glass for rebounds and put-back shots against the much smaller Durham Academy (7-2).

Rhodes chipped in 10 points, most coming from the paint, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and five assists. Amy Causey and Bryan combined for another 11 points, most of which also came from inside.

Cave Spring plays tonight at 8 in Chapel Hill against the winner of the Chapel Hill Academy/South Cobb (Ga.) semifinal.

C.D. Hylton 62, Pulaski County 55: Pulaski County was down by one point with less than three minutes left, but C.D. Hylton's Jakie Smith completed a three-point play to seal a semifinal win over the Cougars in the Bookjammin Invitational.

Smith put on a clinic at Lake Braddock High School against Pulaski (4-3), pouring in a game-high 31 points to seal a spot in the final for the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-1 forward led the much bigger Hylton squad, as it controlled the boards and generated numerous second-chance baskets.

Freshman Katrina Williams and Lisa Skeens led the Cougars with 11 points each.
