ADKINS, Edith Gibson, 70, of Gretna, died Wednesday, December 27, 1995. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Chapel, Galax.

ALLS, Byron Plane, 85, of Riner, died Tuesday, December 26, 1995. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris A. Hogan, and a son, James S. Alls. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Hipes Alls of Riner; one daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Harlow Dickerson of Riner; four sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Alls of South Carolina, Roy J. and Mary Alls of Christiansburg, Robert and Phyllis Alls of Riner, and R. J. Alls of Riner; one son-in-law, Garland Hogan of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. BINGHAM, Ruth Williams, 88, of Villamont, died Sunday, December 10, 1995. She was the widow of Harvey Collins Bingham. She was a member of the first graduating class of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, the Class of 1925. She joined Villamont Presbyterian Church in 1921 as a charter member. Survivors include a son, Harvey Williams Bingham of Lexington, Mass.; a daughter, Mary Bingham Olch of Kensington, Md.; a brother, Russell Lloyd Williams of Buena Vista, and two nephews, Russell Lloyd Williams II of Buena Vista and John Penry Nelson of Roanoke. A memorial serv ice will be scheduled for a later date

BOOTH, Larry Franklin Denny, 54, of 1001 Royal Oaks Dr., Stockton, Calif., died Thursday, December 21, 1995 after a short illness. He was born June 4, 1941 in Wytheville, Va. He moved from Virginia to the Bay Area in 1961. He lived in Lodi, Calif. for eight years and then moved to Stockton, where he was a resident for eight years. He was a self-employed General Contractor for remodeled and new gas stations for 15 years. He was a member of the Woodbridge Community Church. He attended Emory & Henry College in Virginia, where he majored in Business and Music. He received a Bachelor's Degree in business. He is survived by his wife, Robyn Booth, Stockton, Calif.; three daughters, Elizabeth Earhart, Staunton, Laura Gaylor, Richmond, and Rebecca Gillis of Lodi, Calif.; three sons, William Booth and Jonathan Booth, both of Lodi, Calif. and Andrew Booth, Stockton, Calif.; one brother, John Booth of San Francisco, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held Wednesday, December 27, 1995, at Woodbridge Community Church, with the Rev. Sammie Walls officiating, with private inurnment. BROCKWAY, Nancy Blanche Thomas, 96, of Roanoke, and formerly of Sherwood Avenue, S.W., died Thursday, December 28, 1995. She was born in Wythe County on December 25, 1899, the daughter of Richard S. and Frances S. Thomas. Mrs. Brockway was the widow of Russell S. Brockway and a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Stanley and Jeanne Brockway of Annandale; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty B. and Rea Low of Roanoke; five grandsons, Allan B. Brockway of Front Royal, Philip B. Brockway and wife, Pam of Manto, N.C., Robert B. Brockway of Kissimmee, Fla., Samuel R. Low III and wife, Janet of Springfield, Va., Thomas E. Low and wife, Anne of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, Sara L. Keeler and husband, Michael of Katonah, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Willie Thomas Meredith of Roanoke, Cleadiece Thomas Funkhouser of Harrisonburg. FERGUSON, Eugene Bain, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 28, 1995, at the Veterans Hospital in Salem. He was retired from Roanoke Stove Works and was predeceased by his parents, Charles H. and Sallie L. Ferguson; a brother, Kent Ferguson. Surviving are his wife, Bobby L. Ferguson; one daughter, Joy F. Rink, Sebring, Fla.; grandson, Jason Rink, Sebring, Fla.; one sister, Gladys F. Howell, Vinton; one brother, Charles H. Ferguson Jr., Roanoke. FORRESTER, Rev. Dr. Richard Hynson, 88, of Richmond, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 at the Hermitage, Richmond. Dr. Forrester was a member of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church for over 60 years, and followed his father and grandfather in the ministry of the Methodist Church. He served in the active ministry at The Essex Circuit, Miller's Tavern, Tappahanock, Reedville, Pace Memorial-Richmond, Leesburg, Altavista, Thrasher Memorial in Vinton, Main Street-Suffolk, Front Royal, First Church-Martinsville, Fredericksburg, Wesley-Vienna and the Prince George Circuit. He served in the Bishop's Cabinet as Superintendent of the Eastern Shore and was a Delegate to the World Methodist Council in London, England in 1964 and in Denver, Colorado in 1969. Dr. Forrester retired in 1972, but returned to Thrasher Memorial in Vinton as an Associate Minister and was Pastor Emeritus until his death. Dr. Forrester attended Emory & Henry College and graduated from Randolph-Macon College and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Randolph-Macon College awarded him a Doctorate of Divini ty in 1964. He was active in the Sight Program of the Lion's Club a number of years and was a 50 year Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Halford Forrester. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard H. Jr. and Charlotte Hines Forrester of Richmond; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Forrester Stout and Dr. Frank W. Stout of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Halford Forrester, Anne Rachen Forrester, Richard H. Forrester III, F. William Stout Jr., Diana Forrester Stout; a brother, George Thomas Forrester, Orlando, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted from Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 1995, with the Rev. W. A. Layman officiating. GRAVES, Sara Beth, 64, of Roanoke County, passed away Thursday, December 28, 1995. Sara was a secretary and bookkeeper for Valley Marine Center. Graves; her daughters-in-l aw, Sandy Graves, Trena Swain, all of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Jeremy Daniel Graves, Atlanta, Ga., Celia Leigh and Teri Lynne Graves, both of Roanoke; a sister, Celia Mae Brown, Norman, Okla. HICKS, W. Vernon, 81, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 27, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Hicks was the husband of Lucille K. Hicks; son of the late W. P. and Sallie Holland Hicks. He was born on December 31, 1913 in Moneta. A graduate of the University of Virginia, he retired as a CPA from R. L. Persinger and Co., Roanoke. Mr. Hicks was an active member of the Elks Club, L.A.B.A.C Investment Club, and the Williamson Road Lions Club. He was also an active member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, W. Vernon Jr. and Ann A. Hicks, Crestview, Ky., Donald W. and Celeste H. Hicks, Gloucester; daughter, Sally R. HOLMES, Dr. Keith D., of Boones Mill, died Sunday, December 24, 1995. He was born in North Pitcher, N.Y., and was educated in Oswego College. He took his Master's Degree at Columbia University and his Ph.D. at Cornell University. He directed the Reading Clinic at East Caro lina University in Greenville, N.C., which was named in his honor. Dr. Holmes was the author of seven textbooks in Language Arts. Surviving are his wife, Adriana Holmes; sons, Dr. Keith D. Holmes, Jr., Conn., Dr. Steven Holmes, Greenville, N.C.; grandchildren, Christopher Patrick, Benjamin Tucker. JONES, Martha Thelma, 92, of Salem, formerly of Norfolk, Va., died Wednesday, December 27, 1995 in Richfield Nursing Center, Salem. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, The Rev. Dr. George Wesley and Rachel Jones, Vinton; two nephews, Ronnie L. Jones, Norfolk, David A. Jones, Charlotte, N.C.; a neice, Carolyn J. Nelson, Charlotte, N.C.; and a great-nephew and great-neice, Allen and Jodie Nelson, Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Jones was a retired employee of the Metropolitian Life Insurance Company. The body will be taken from the Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Chapel, to Zion-Grace United Methodist Church, of which she was a lifelong member, for funeral services to be conducted by the Rev. JONES, Willard Ernest, 79, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 26, 1995 in Community Hospital. He was born July 27, 1916, to the late Ernest Gilbert and Ida Finney Jones. He attended Addison High School, Roanoke. Mr. Jones was a faithful member and devoted Deacon of Slate Hill Baptist Church, where he served in the Mass and Senior Choirs, Male Chorus, and provided leadership for the Adult Sunday School, Young Adult Service League, the Deacon Ministry and Mid-Week Bible Study. For his community, he served as chaplain and representative for the Fairland Lake Civic Organization. He was a retired employee of Norfolk and Western Railroad, where he worked for 41 years. Preceding him in death were one daughter, Velma Jones Young, in 1988, and two brothers, Harry Lee and Otha Clay Jones. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Gladys Taylor Jones; one son and daughter-in-law, Ernest Willard and Annie May Jones, Roanoke; two daughters and son-in-law, Alda Jones and Michael Landers, Westchester, N.Y., and Michelle Renee Jones, Roanoke; two sisters, Reva M. and Alma E. Jones, Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles E. and Christine Jones; four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Blanche T. Craig, James Lee and Frances Taylor, Mae T. Taylor, Louise Taylor, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Kim M. and Bryan P. Young, Richmond, Michael Landers II, Westchester, N.Y., Ernest W., Christina R., Michael W., and Richard E. KLING, Pauline Pippin (`` Polly''), 76, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 27, 1995, after a long courageous battle with arthritis. She served the Roanoke City Schools as a secretary, and retired after 20 years service as the secretary of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church. Surviving are her husband, Wiley B. Kling, Roanoke; son, Stephen W. Kling, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Wiley B. Jr. and Bonnie Kling, Hot Springs, Va.; sister, Dorothy Trent, Reidsville, N. C.; grandchildren, Josh and Karen Kling, Hot Springs; sisters-in-law, Mildred Kling, Lois Herring, Roanoke; brother-in-law and wife, David and Marjorie Kling, Belpre, Ohio; numerous nephews and nieces, all of Ohio and North Carolina. LAPRADE, Wilfred Montgomery, 71, of Salem, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene P. LaPrade, a son, Carl T. LaPrade, and his parents, James Lewis LaPrade and Sallie Elizabeth Montgomery LaPrade. He was retired from Norfolk & Western Railway and was a member of Belmont Christian Church. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, James Richard and Ethel P. LaPrade, Chesapeake, Earl Wilfred and Judy M. LaPrade, Thaxton; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy L. and James Bell, Salem, Darlene L. and Ernest L. Coon, Roanoke; one brother, James Wallace LaPrade, Lexington; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. LYNCH, Virginia Jones, 78, of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 in a Salem hospital. Mrs. Lynch was a retired switchboard operator for Lewis-Gale Hospital for many years. Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Dickie and James Moynihan, Roanoke; and a niece, Polly B. Moynihan, Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Flora Jones, Richmond. A memorial service will be at St. John's Episcopal Church 2 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 1995, wit h the Rev. Frank Allen and the Rev. Lottie Cochran officiating. MINTON, Effie Haynes, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 1995. S he was preceded in death by her husband, Harley R. Minton, and a son, Richard (``Dick'') Minton. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ben G. and Lee Minton, Vinton, Fred L. and Jenny Minton, Warren, Mich., Peter D. and Amanda (``Diana'') Minton, Salem; also surviving are two brothers, Jack Haynes and F. MOYE, Virgil Jarvis, 75, of Pearisburg, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 at his home following a long illness. Mr. Moye was a retired employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Corp., with 42 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II. He was born in Pearisburg on July 19, 1920, and was a son of the late Tom Moye and Dora Levit Moye. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Albert and Shirley Ramsey; and a daughter, Donna Moye Sanchez. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ilene Stewart Moye, Pearisburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jane Moye, Pearisburg, Tommy and Sharon Moye, Pearisburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and James Hale, Pearisburg; three brothers, Forest Moye, Madison, Ind., Everett Moye, Pearisburg, John T. Moye, Narrows, three sisters, Vivian Akers, Pearisburg, Violet Philpott, Pearisburg, Hazel Brown, Martinsville; mother-in-law, Ethel Atwell, Pearisburg; five grandchildren, Shannon, Michelle, Scott, Krista, Ashley; two great-grandchildren, Jayke and Marinna Dale. PROCTOR, Mable Clements, 87, of Bedford, and formerly of Tifton, Ga., died Thursday, December 28, 1995 at her residence. She was born in Wilcox County, Ga., a daughter of the late Thomas Clements and Fannie McCoy Clements. She was the widow of William McKinley Proctor. She was the retired owner and operator of Proctor Grocery, and was a member of the Bedford Church of God. She is survived by a son, James Alfred Proctor, Roswell, Ga.; two daughters, Clara M. Gill, Bedford, and Christine P. Wood, Smithfield; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 29, 1995 at 7 p.m. at the Bedford Church of God, with the Rev. John R. Ivins and the Rev. Theo Arnette officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Proctor will be transported to Bowen-Donaldson Funeral Home in Tifton, Ga., where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 1, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Union Grove Church of God in Tifton, Ga. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. RADFORD, Paul D., 51, of Chesapeake, died Wednesday, December 27, 1995 in a Beckley, W.Va. hospital. He was employed as Manager of Medical Services at Norfolk Southern Corporation, Norfolk. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Vest Radford, Chesapeake; daughter, Amy Cheree Radford, Floyd; mother, Delma Radford, Floyd; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mary Radford, Roanoke; nephew, his wife and daughters, Ricky and Cindy Radford, Kayla and Amanda, Roanoke; niece, her husband and daughter, Vickie and Greg Duff, and Danielle, Hopwood, Pa.; mother-in-law, Ruby Vest, Floyd. RICHARDSON, Jason A., 80 of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 1995. He was a lifelong member of Cloverdale Church of The Brethren, a life membership Dea con and Head Usher. He was a Charter member and sector representative for the Cloverdale Community Civic League. He was a school bus driver for the County of Botetourt for 18 years. Mr. Richardson was also a retired produce Farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy T. Richardson and parents, Roy A. and Mary C. Richardson. He is survived by a sister, Ardelia R. Weeks; brother and sister-in-law, Randolph and Kathleen Richardson; four nieces; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; two great-great-nephews; and a special friend, Virginia Powell. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 30, 1995 at Oakey's North Chapel with Rev. J. Weldon Myers and Rev. Emma Jean Woodard officiating. Interment will follow in Daleville Cemetery. ROBISON, Chester L., Sr., 96, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 28, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wives, Gladys Marie Robison and Edna Martin Robison; and son, Chester L. Robison Jr. Mr. Robison was a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company with 40 years of service. In 1969 he was father of the year for Family Life, he was a member of Lakeland Masonic Lodge #190AF and AM and many other civic organizations. He was a long time member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Sherry Robison, Roanoke County; daughter and son-in-law, Winona and Robert Wilhelm, California; daughter, Nancy Robison, Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Lorain Robison, Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Angie Robison, Wendy Robison, James Robison, Gladys Munsey, Wanda Runions, Lou Wilhelm, Jenise Kyle and Lex Wilhelm; eleven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Louis A. Timmons officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. STARKEY, A nnice Pugh, 84, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, December 27, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Starkey, and was a longtime member of Flint Hill United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Earldine S. and Vincent Keezer, Merced, Calif.; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Pat Starkey, Richmond; her grandchildren, Dawn Keezer, Robin Keezer, Michelle Starkey, Tonya Robertson; one great-grandchild, Tyler Robertson; two brothers, Vincent Pugh, Rocky Mount, Gilbert Pugh, Bedford; two sisters, Elizabeth Pugh, Roanoke, Madelle Starkey, Rocky Mount; one sister-in-law, Clark Goode, Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles R. Doyle officiating. Interment will follow in Flint Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. UMBERGER, Bertha Cassell, 92, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 in the Malin Health Care Center in Wytheville. She was born in Bland County, the daughter of the la te Kent and Lake Erie Cooper Cassell. She was a retired school teacher, a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and U.M.W. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Umberger. She is survived by one sister, Avis Cassell, Wytheville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 1995 at the Lindsey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rural Retreat. WEIR, Thomas Edward, Chaplain USNR, 70, of University Park, Md., died Sunday, December 24, 1995 at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. The Reverend Doctor Weir was born in 1925 in Washington, N.C. and grew up in Roanoke, Va. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina in February 1945. After graduation, he immediately began active duty in the United States Navy as a line officer, serving until 1952. When he left the Navy, he entered graduate school at Emory University, receiving a Bachelor of Divinity in 1954. While at Emory, he served as Pastor for a three-church circuit in rural Georgia. He then entered the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, earning a Ph.D. in Theology in 1961. His dissertation traced the development of the concepts of church and pastoral care in the Reformed tradition. Beginning in 1956, he served as the director of the Wesley Foundation for the students of Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute. While living in Lexington, he also taught Greek at Washington and Lee and biblical studies at Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, Va. He est
