Part of First Union bias suit settled

Former employees of First American Metro Corp. in the Washington, D.C., area have settled with one of the defendants in a suit that charges discrimination in layoffs after the bank was acquired by First Union Corp.

The settlement with First American Bankshares Inc. provides for payment of $1 million to be divided among 207 former First American employees, four former employees of Meritor Savings FA and four people who applied for employment by First Union but were rejected. The settlement leaves five other defendants in the case, including First Union.

The plaintiffs in the class action suit say they were discriminated against on the basis of age, race or national origin. -Staff report Virginia diners to test fish dish

The Roanoke-Lynchburg market will be one of four national test markets for a new Long John Silver's product, Southwestern Batter-Dipped Fish.

Bruce Hinton, spokesman for Long John Silver's Seafood Shoppe in Roanoke-Lynchburg and three other markets - Wheeling, W.Va., Springfield, Mo., and Fresno, Calif. - said the market reflects the chain's demographic targets: adults aged 25 to 54, families with children and adults age 55 and over. All 23 local restaurants began carrying the new products Thursday.

This marks the first time that the fast-food chain has modified its batter. The new recipe is flavored with a blend of pepper, onion, garlic and other spices.

Lexington, Ky.-based Long John Silver's has more than 1,450 franchise and company-owned restaurants in 37 states and several foreign countries. -Staff report Market schedules change for holiday
