WOMAN WAS A NANNY IN ERA OF DAY-CARE CENTERS

In an age of specialized day-care centers, Dorothy P. Jones contributed to the Good Neighbors Fund in memory of a more old-fashioned version of the nanny.

Jones' gift was made to recognize Betty M. Smith who took care of Jones' grandchildren, Cameron and Claire Johnson, until her death in February. Smith had been a nanny to Cameron for more than 10 years and had looked after Claire ever since the 5-year-old's birth.

Smith watched over Cameron and Claire four days a week while Jones' daughter, Ann Johnson, worked.

"She did everything for [the children]," Jones said. "She wasn't there to do housework or cooking. She was there for the children. Her main job was the children."

Jones said Smith, who was from England, never lost her accent. And some of Jones' fondest memories of Smith are the times when she would fix her special English trifle desserts and butter cookies. Smith brought the recipes for these treats from England, Jones said.

"She was just like a member of the family because she was just a lovely person," Jones said. "We all just loved her."
