ODU'S HODGE SHOOTS DOWN ST.JOE'S 62-60

Odell Hodge, a former Laurel Park High School standout, hit an 18-foot jumper with less than a second to play as Old Dominion edged St.Joseph's 62-60 on Tuesday night in Norfolk.

After the Monarchs' Brion Dunlap missed two free throws with 30 seconds left, Rashid Bey tied the score at 60 for St.Joseph's on a short jumper with seven seconds left.

ODU (5-7) worked the ball downcourt to Hodge for the final shot. The Hawks (4-3) did not have time for a final shot.

Joe Bunn led the Monarchs with 19 points. Hodge also had eight rebounds, two blocks, two assists and three steals.

Will Johnson and Mark Bass scored 11 apiece for St.Joseph's.

Two free throws by Skipper Youngblood gave ODU its biggest lead of the game, 54-47, with 5:49 left. The Hawks tied the score three times in the final minutes.

In other games:

No.4 Kansas 100, Cornell 46: Jacque Vaughn scored 16 points, and a pressing defense complemented by superior size as the Jayhawks (8-1) crushed the Big Red (2-5) in Lawrence, Kan., in the first game since Kansas dropped from atop the Associated Press poll.

The Jayhawks had just returned from three losses against professional teams in a tournament in France, the same tournament where top-ranked Massachusetts lost three times last season.

Eddie Samuel scored 14 points for Cornell.

No.8 Villanova 76, Notre Dame 57: Alvin Williams tied his career high with 22 points to lead the Wildcats (11-1 overall, 3-0 conference) to a Big East Conference victory over the Fighting Irish (5-5, 0-3) in Villanova, Pa.

Kerry Kittles added 17 points and Jason Lawson had 16 for Villanova (11-1, 3-0), which turned over the ball only eight times and outscored Notre Dame 19-2 from the free-throw line.

No.12 Wake Forest 81, Furman 49: Tim Duncan snapped the Demon Deacons (7-1) out of the doldrums by powering a second-half surge that carried them to a rout of the Paladins (2-8) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Duncan helped Wake Forest pull away by scoring 15 of the Deacons' first 22 points of the half. The 6-foot-10 junior center finished with 27 points - one better than his previous career high - and 12 rebounds.

Furman, led by former VMI coach Joe Cantafio, has not defeated a Division I foe since Feb.18, 1995, a span of 11 games.

No.15 Utah 83, Brigham Young 77: Keith Van Horn scored 29 points, and the Utes (9-2) held off the Cougars (6-4) in Salt Lake City in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Bryon Ruffner, who led BYU with 26 points, scored eight points to pull the Cougars to 66-64 with 4:44 to play. Utah, which has won 27 consecutive home games, scored the next seven points.

N.C. State 102, Western Carolina 71: Todd Fuller scored 30 points, including 11 in a row during a 2:11 span in the second half, as the Wolfpack (8-2) put away pesky the Catamounts (1-7) in Raleigh, N.C.

N.C. State, in its final tuneup before ACC play, trailed late in the first half and only led 54-50 with 15:14 remaining before going on a 22-2 run to put away the game.

Liberty 84, King 55: Peter Aluma scored 17 points to lead the Flames (5-4) past the Tornadoes (2-9) in Lynchburg.

Liberty shot 53 percent from the field with Erik Sorensen scoring 12 points and Marcus White 11.

Women

Clemson 63, No.5 Virginia 59: The Tigers stayed unbeaten and snapped the second-longest current NCAA Division I home-court winning streak, stunning the Cavaliers at University Hall in the ACC opener for both teams. UVa had won 61 consecutive home games, second only to fourth-ranked Tennessee's 69 victories.

Clemson (10-0) led 37-26 at halftime and pushed its margin to 13, at 41-28. The Cavs (8-3) tied it at 53 with 6:49 to play. The teams traded baskets before freshman guard Amy Geren hit a 3-pointer to put the Tigers in front to stay.

Geren finished with 17 points. Wendy Palmer had 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Tora Suber added 17 points and six assists for UVa.

Radford 87, Lafayette 59: Former Bassett High School star Kim Hairston scored 21 points as the Highlanders (4-7) tuned up for Big South play with a rout of the Leopards (2-7) at the Dedmon Center.

Radford closed the first half with a 10-0 run that made it 43-28 and never looked back. Rebecca McNeil, from Christiansburg High School, added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Highlanders.

Keri Hollister led Lafayette with 14 points.

Notes

IT'S FREE!: Chuck Taylor, Radford's athletic director, announced Tuesday that fans will be admitted free of charge for tonight's men's game against Duquesne at the Dedmon Center. ``It's a late Christmas present for the basketball fans in our area,'' Taylor said. ``We would like to have as many fans in the Dedmon Center as possible. We have enjoyed tremendous success at home over the years and would like to continue that against one of the best teams ever to play here.''

Tip-off for tonight's game is at 7. Duquesne is the first Atlantic 10 team to play in the Dedmon Center, and the battle with the Dukes is the Highlanders' final tuneup for Big South play. Radford opens Big South action Saturday at UNC Greensboro.

McINNIS HURTING: Jeff McInnis, North Carolina's leader in scoring and assists, likely will miss Thursday's ACC opener against North Carolina State because of injuries.

McInnis, a point guard who is averaging 16.5 points and 5.4 assists per game, suffered a deep bruise to his left thigh during Saturday's 74-72 loss at Texas. It is the same leg in which he pulled a groin muscle three weeks ago.

``I just can't imagine him being available ... so we're definitely not counting on him,'' coach Dean Smith said Tuesday.

'HUSKER ARRESTED, SUSPENDED: A Nebraska player was suspended from the team after being arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Sgt. Ann Heermann said Chester B. Surles, 19, was arrested after he turned himself in to police. He was lodged in the Lancaster County jail ``in accordance with standard police procedure for domestic violence cases,'' she said.

A misdemeanor assault charge was listed on the arrest warrant. Formal charges are expected to be filed today.

Nebraska basketball coach Danny Nee said the 6-7 sophomore forward from Saginaw, Mich., has been indefinitely suspended.

LIBERTY-UMBC POSTPONED: Thursday's scheduled game between Liberty and Maryland-Baltimore County has been postponed because of the death of Retrievers player Matt Skalsky. The sophomore forward died early Monday of head injuries suffered Sunday night at an off-campus party in Darnestown, Md.

The Big South Conference game will be made up at 8:30 p.m. Jan.10 in Baltimore.

Preliminary results from an autopsy Tuesday failed to determine the cause of death for Skalsky. The autopsy did reveal Skalsky did not die as a result of a blow to the head.

PARTY'S OVER FOR FRESNO STATE PLAYER: A hotel room rented by Fresno State's Dominick Young for a New Year's Eve party with teammates was vandalized and stripped of furnishings, Fresno, Calif., police said.

Young, the Bulldogs' starting point guard, said he rented the suite in the San Joaquin Suite Hotel on Sunday, but had nothing to do with the thefts of more than $600 in furnishings. A guest of Young also allegedly punched a security guard that night, said Lt. Jerry Dyer, a police spokesman. Young said he left the suite before the alleged incidents occurred.

School officials said they would investigate the incident.
