Mountain Empire buys office space

Mountain Empire Services of the Southwest Inc. has purchased an office building at 700 University City Blvd., behind the Blacksburg Marriott hotel. The agency paid $900,000 for the building, which contains 35,000 square feet on two floors. It will consolidate some of its present offices in the new location.

Life Insurance Co. of Virginia, the seller, held the mortgage. Stuart Meredith and Ed Hall of Hall Associates Inc. of Roanoke represented the seller in the transaction.

Coal production off

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - U.S. coal production fell 2.8 percent in the week ended Dec. 23, from 19.9 million tons to 19.3 million tons, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The coal industry produced 20.4 million tons in the same week last year.

Virginia mines produced 662,000 tons in the survey week, down from 687,000 tons a week earlier and 705,000 tons in the same week a year ago.

For 1995 through Dec. 23, U.S. production totaled 1,005 million tons, 0.7 percent lower than the 1994 period.

Hooker Furniture Corp. of Martinsville has approved a one-for-one stock split, with new shares paid Jan. 15. The board also increased the common stock dividend to 11 cents per share after the split, to be paid Feb. 28 to shareholders on Feb. 15. Prior to the split, the dividend rate was 18 cents per share. Hooker reported net income of $9.2 million, or $4.73 per share, on sales of $144.7 million for its fiscal year ended Nov. 30, compared with year-earlier $6.6 million, or $3.42 per share, on sales of $138.2 million.

Chesapeake Corp., Richmond-based forest products company with its Chesapeake Packaging Co. division in Roanoke, said it has completed the $29 million sale of Chesapeake Consumer Products Co., a subsidiary based in Appleton, Wis., to The Fonda Group Inc. of St. Albans, Vt. The unit markets premium disposable tableware, including napkins, paper plates and table covers.
