BOTETOURT COACH GETS 1ST WIN

Lord Botetourt saw a 13-point halftime lead dissolve, but the Cavaliers recovered to pull out a 74-72 overtime victory over Roanoke Valley Christian on Tuesday night in Daleville, giving coach Ed Purdy his first victory as a head coach.

The Eagles took a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, but Botetourt cut its deficit to two at the end of the first period. The Cavaliers (1-5) then outscored RVC 22-7 in the second quarter.

Chris Huffman had nine points in the fourth quarter for the Eagles (7-2) to send the contest to overtime.

Sophomore Michael Yates sank three of four free throws in the waning seconds to seal the victory for Botetourt and Purdy.

Wesley Cox led a quartet of Cavaliers scorers in double figures with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Michael Gates chipped in 16 points, eight of which came in the second quarter.

Mark Arbogast led RVC with a game-high 20 points and Huffman finished with 17. The Eagles took 33 shots from beyond the 3-point arc, connecting on eight.

Cave Spring 98, Franklin County 75: Twelve Knights put their names in the box score, but it was Jeff Lang's name in bold print as the senior point guard scored 30 points to lead Cave Spring to a Roanoke Valley District victory over visiting Franklin County in the district opener for both teams.

The Knights (6-5, 1-0) held an 11-point advantage at the half, but came out of the locker room in a stifling man-to-man defense that took the life out of the Eagles. Franklin County (2-9, 0-1) managed only eight points in the third quarter to Cave Spring's 22.

Both teams went on scoring sprees in the final quarter, but it was Cave Spring that outlasted Franklin County.
