LITTLE IMPACT LIKELY IN ROANOKE AREA

AT&T has about 100 employees in the Roanoke area, among 7,400 in Virginia, said company spokesman Al Wann. Most are in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Tidewater, he said.

There is no information yet on how many layoffs, if any, might occur in the Roanoke area, Wann said. He doesn't think the impact will be significant, as most Roanoke Valley workers are in sales jobs and important to the new communications services. The jobs that will be cut are paperwork jobs in administration and other areas, and the "vast majority" are in New Jersey, Wann said.

Kirk Sampson, who manages AT&T's business marketing sales office in Roanoke, said he doesn't think the layoffs will affect his office at all. No AT&T workers in Southwest Virginia were offered a recent buyout package, he said.
