Fieldale-Collinsville overcame three 3-point goals by Martinsville's Manti Venable in the final minutes to hold on for a 57-55 Piedmont District victory Tuesday night in Collinsville.
The Cavaliers (6-2 overall, 6-1 district) led by as many as 14 before Venable sparked a Martinsville run midway through the third quarter. Venable scored nine of his 28 points in the third period as the Bulldogs cut their deficit to six. Martinsville (1-6, 1-5) stayed close in the fourth period and trailed by four after Venable hit back-to-back 3s with a minute left. After Neil Harbor hit one of two free-throw attempts, Venable sank another 3-pointer to pull Martinsville to the final margin with 18 seconds left. The Bulldogs attempted two more shots, but Fieldale-Collinsville rebounded the ball and ran out the clock.

Cave Spring 98, Franklin County 75: Twelve Knights put their names in the box score, but it was Jeff Lang's name in bold print as the senior point guard led Cave Spring to a Roanoke Valley District victory over visiting Franklin County in the district opener for both teams.
The Knights (6-5, 1-0) held an 11-point advantage at the half, but came out of the locker room in a stifling man-to-man defense that took the life out of the Eagles. Franklin County (2-9, 0-1) managed only eight points in the third quarter to Cave Spring's 22.
Both teams went on scoring sprees in the final quarter, but it was Cave Spring that outlasted Franklin County.
Lang helped build a dominating 24-12 first quarter lead by draining four 3-pointers in the first quarter. He sank seven en route to a 30-point performance to go with his eight assists.
It was not a one-man show, however, as junior big man Alex Phillips chipped in 22 points and Billy Frantz added nine. Phillips also led the Knights in rebounding, with nine, as Cave Spring dominated its district foe 35-17.

Tunstall hit double figures only in the third quarter and was 0-for-10 from 3-point range.
The Bengals (5-3, 5-2) didn't do a bad job of defending Tunstall, either. For example, Bassett held the Trojans' leading scorer, Derrick Rogers, to five points. He had been averaging 22.
``We couldn't throw the ball in the ocean from an aircraft carrier,'' said Bill Oakes, Tunstall's coach.
