Festival of Trees winners announced
The Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley has announced the awards winners for its 13th annual Festival of Trees.
They are: Salvation Army/Turning Point, People's Choice (charitable organizations) award; Bell Atlantic/Telephone Pioneers of America, People's Choice (noncharitable) and Children's Choice (noncharitable) awards; Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council, Children's Choice (charitable organizations) award; and Allstate Insurance Company, Spirit of the Season award.
New support group for caregivers
Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center and The American Cancer Society have announced a new program designed to help friends, acquaintances and caregivers of cancer patients provide support for and communicate with patients and their families.
The program will be offered in six segments running from Tuesday through March 26. All sessions will be held at Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center from 7 to 8 p.m.
A videotape hosted by Dr. Nancy Snyderman of "Good Morning America" will highlight each session, supplemented by local health care professionals, including Dr. Jeffrey F. Patton; oncology social workers Suzanne Zollman and Sarah Wolfe; dietician Audrey Burt and Daphne Depuy, executive director, American Cancer Society.
Local churches, civic groups and other organizations may schedule this program at their facilities by calling Sarah Wolfe at 776-4160.

Adult basketball registering teams
The Salvation Army Community Center's adult basketball league will begin season play Jan. 29 with games to be played on weekday mornings at 9 a.m.
The entry fee is $175 per team which may be paid in cash or by company check only. The entry deadline is Jan. 19. For more information, call Phillip Priest or Judy Flanagan, 345-4483.
Citizens' input sought by city
The city of Roanoke invites residents to attend a Consolidated Plan Public Meeting Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. in the atrium of Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave.
City staff will seek public input about the plan's current priorities and objectives for funding received from the Federal Housing and Urban Development Office. Participants will select one of five small group discussions in which to contribute with topics including: housing, homeless services, human services, neighborhood and community development and economic development.
Organizations competing for available funds must submit proposals by Feb. 9.
