PARKER'S SHOT GIVES RADFORD A BIG WIN

Eric Parker's baseline jumper with five seconds remaining gave Radford University a 65-64 victory over Duquesne on Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.

Parker, a 6-foot-10 center, hit a five-footer eight seconds after Mike James put Duquesne (5-4), members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, ahead 64-63. Parker played 18 minutes and finished with six points.

Jason Lansdown's 3-pointer gave Radford (6-6) its biggest lead, 49-38 with 12:04 remaining. But Tom Pipkins scored 11 of his 21 points during a 20-8 run that put the Dukes on top 58-57 with 3:24 left.

The lead changed hands eight times in the final 3:24.

Eric Bowens came off the bench to lead Radford with 17 points. Lansdown added 16 and Kevin Robinson 11.

No.2 Kentucky 89, South Carolina 60: Tony Delk had 28 points as the Wildcats (10-1) opened their Southeastern Conference schedule with a rout of the Gamecocks (6-3) in Columbia, S.C.

Kentucky used a 17-5 run to start the second half and a 19-0 run later in the period to pull away from South Carolina.

Larry Davis led the Gamecocks with 18 points.

No.6 Georgetown 81, DePaul 61: Allen Iverson scored 24 points, and the Hoyas cruised past a Blue Demons team that lost two starters - guard Juan Gay and forward Charles Gelatt - to academic difficulties before the game in Rosemont, Ill.

Georgetown (12-1) opened the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 51-34 lead. DePaul (7-4) used a 16-6 spurt to close to 57-50 on a layup by Thomas Cooper, but Iverson's three-point play and a basket by Jerome Williams gave the Hoyas a 62-50 lead.

No.7 Connecticut 89, West Virginia 79: Ray Allen scored 23 points and Doron Sheffer added 20 as the Huskies capitalized on the Mountaineers' mistakes to roll to a Big East Conference victory in Morgantown, W.Va.

WVU (5-4, 0-2) closed the game with a 15-0 run capped by Jarrod West's 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer, making the game appear closer than it was. UConn (11-1, 3-0) finished with three freshmen and none of their starters on the floor.

The Mountaineers were led by Gordon Malone's 16 points and Cyrus Jones' 15.

Purdue 85, No.10 Iowa 61: In West Lafayette, Ind., reserve Brad Miller scored a career-high 23 points as the Boilermakers snapped the Hawkeyes' nine-game winning streak and extended their own winning streak to seven.

Purdue (11-2) broke open the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams early in the second half with a 16-4 run. Iowa (11-2) led 41-40 before Brandon Brantley's dunk on a pass from Porter Roberts gave the Boilermakers the lead for good. The Hawkeyes didn't score in the final 2:58 as Purdue pulled away

Miami 75, No.11 Syracuse 66: Freshman Tim James scored 19 points in 18 minutes as the Hurricanes handed the Orangemen their second consecutive loss, this one in a Big East game in Miami.

James, the past week's Big East rookie of the week, hit two baskets during a 12-0 run midway through the second half that gave Miami (8-3, 2-1) the lead for the good against Syracuse (11-2, 2-1).

Minnesota 69, No.13 Illinois 64: Sam Jacobson scored 22 points and Bobby Jackson added 17 off the bench to lead the Golden Gophers (9-4) past the Fighting Illini (11-2) in Minneapolis in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Minnesota, which made seven of eight free throws in the final 41 seconds to clinch the victory, held Illinois star Kiwane Garris to a career-low three points. Jerry Hester led the Illini with 20.

No.14 Georgia 74, Mississippi 38: Shandon Anderson had 19 points to lead four scorers in double figures as the Bulldogs (10-1) routed the Rebels in Athens, Ga., in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Ansu Sesay scored 12 points for Ole Miss (5-5).

No.17 Mississippi State 77, LSU 64: Darryl Wilson scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs (9-1) past the Tigers (7-5) in an SEC opener in Baton Rouge, La.

LSU was led by Ronnie Henderson, who after scoring just four points in the first half, finished with 22.

No.22 Clemson 51, No.19 Duke 48: Freshman point guard Terrell McIntyre buried a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left, giving the Tigers (10-0) their third consecutive victory over the Blue Devils (9-3), this one in Clemson, S.C.

Duke (9-3) appeared to be in control of the ACC opener for both when it extended a 25-22 halftime lead with a 16-4 run to start the second half. Clemson (10-0) got right back in it with a 22-1 surge of its own that produced a 48-42 lead with 2:11 to play.

The Blue Devils' Ricky Price then hit two 3-pointers to tie the score with 1:14 left. After a Duke turnover, McIntyre hit the winning 3-pointer. The Blue Devils' final possession ended with a turnover with two seconds left.

McIntyre and Merl Code finished with 12 points each for the Tigers. Jeff Capel scored all 17 of his points in the first half to lead Duke.

Wisconsin 51, No.21 Michigan 46: Mosezell Peterson scored 17 points, including a key basket in the final seconds, as the Badgers (9-4) upset the Wolverines (10-4) in a Big Ten opener in Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before rallying to give coach Dick Bennett a victory in his first conference game. The Badgers held a 47-46 lead when Peterson, a reserve sophomore guard, broke free against Michigan's press and scored an uncontested layup with 20 seconds left.

Louis Bullock led the Wolverines with 13 points.

Nebraska 85, No.23 Texas 69: Erick Strickland scored six of his 17 points in the final four minutes, and the Cornhuskers (10-3) hit a school-record 43 free throws in a victory over the Longhorns (7-3) in Lincoln, Neb. Texas, playing its first game since joining the Top 25 on Monday, committed 38 fouls.

No.24 Boston College 95, Rutgers 67: Antonio Granger scored 15 points and the Eagles (9-2, 2-1) celebrated their return to the Top 25 with a Big East rout of the Scarlet Knights (4-6, 1-2) in Piscataway, N.J.

Damon Santiago led Rutgers with 15 points.

VMI 101, Winthrop 78: Jason Bell scored 23 points in 20 minutes of play, and Bryan Taueg added 18 to lead the Keydets past the Eagles at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

Bell scored 14 of his points in the first half for VMI (5-3), including an eight-point burst in less than two minutes that broke an 8-8 tie and put Winthrop (1-9) behind for good. Bell finished 9-of-13 from the field.

Taueg hit three of his eight 3-point attempts, accounting for half of his scoring total. The Keydets were 8-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Bobby Prince (Lord Botetourt High School) scored 12 points and added nine assists for the Keydets. VMI's Lester Johnson led all rebounders with 10.

``Our defense helped to pick up our offense tonight, and that's a sign of a good team,'' Bellairs said.

Tyson Waterman led the Eagles with 15 points before he fouled out with 1:38 to play. Todd Pigford and Andrew McFalls added 12 each for Winthrop.

Georgia Tech 98, Maryland 84: Stephon Marbury and Matt Harpring scored 23 points each and Drew Barry added 21 as the Yellow Jackets (7-7) snapped a four-game losing streak with a victory over the Terrapins (6-4) in an ACC opener in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech never trailed after Harpring started a 9-0 run in the final 98 seconds of the first half, one Michael Maddox ended on two free throws with 18:12 to play to give the Yellow Jackets a 46-42 lead. Mario Lucas led Maryland with 21 points.

Temple 58, St.Bonaventure 56: Levan Alston hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to give the Owls (4-6, 1-0) an Atlantic 10 Conference victory over the Bonnies (4-4, 0-1) in Philadelphia.

Marc Jackson led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds for Temple., his fourth consecutive double-double. Kenny McFarland scored 19 points for St.Bonaventure.

In another game involving Atlantic 10 teams: Romaine Haywood scored 19 points, and La Salle (3-8) fought off a second-half rally by Princeton (7-4) to edge the Tigers 52-49 in Philadelphia.

Virginia Wesleyan 103, Washington and Lee 82: The Marlins (8-2, 4-0) used a 15-0 run in the first half to take control and rolled to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Generals (1-10, 1-4) in Lexington.

Percy Slight led the way for Virginia Wesleyan with 24 points. W&L coming off a 28-day layoff, got 21 points each from Jon Coffman and Cam Dyer.

In another game involving a Virginia team and an Atlantic 10 team: Darnell Hahn scored 13 points as Dayton (8-3) overcame an early slump to defeat Hampton 91-65 in Dayton, Ohio, in the first meeting between the two teams. JaFonde Williams had 38 points for the Pirates (4-9).

Women

Virginia Tech 75, Fordham 59: Michelle Hollister scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half as the Hokies (3-6) pulled away from a halftime tie to defeat the Rams (6-3) in New York in the first Atlantic 10 Conference game for both teams.

Freshman Katie O'Connor had a team-high 16 points for Tech, which trailed 7-0. Sherry Banks (William Byrd High School) had 15 points and four assists and Terri Garland (Pulaski County High School) added 10 points and six assists.

Suzanne Maguire led Fordham with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Tuesday's games

Fresno State 76, New Mexico 75: Dominick Young hit two free throws with three seconds left to give the Bulldogs (7-4) an upset of the Lobos (10-1) in Fresno, Calif., in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Kendric Brooks led Fresno State with a career-high 32 points. Brooks scored five points in a 9-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 60-55 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.

New Mexico, which joined the Top 25 on Monday, came back to lead 75-74 with 55 seconds left on four consecutive points by David Gibson. But Gibson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 27 seconds left before Young's heroics.

Rahsaan Smith added 19 points for Fresno State.

Charles Smith and Clayton Shields each had 18 points for New Mexico and Gibson finished with 16.

Rhode Island 81, St.Mary's (Calif.) 74: Tyson Wheeler's 30 points, including three consecutive 3-pointers in the second half, led the Rams (8-3) past the Gaels (5-4) in Moraga, Calif.

The victory, Rhode Island's fourth in its past five games, already gives the Rams one more win then they had all last season when they went 7-20.

GEORGE MASON LOSES DUO: Two George Mason players, including leading scorer Nate Langley, were suspended indefinitely after being declared academically ineligible.

Langley, last season's rookie of the year in the Colonial Athletic Association, was averaging 21.9 points per game and had 37 steals in eight games this season. Also suspended was junior forward Kevin Ward, who had averaged 12.8 minutes in eight games.
